Dogs on property...

I don’t like pepper spray. I went to spray it once and the wind blew it back in my face!

So since then I won’t use it...

However... there are pepper guns.... basically a paintball gun loaded with paintballs that are filled with the pepper spray liquid instead of paint. They shoot up to 150 feet. They seem to work very very well. Sadly they are really expensive. Both the gun and the pepper balls.

No thanks, bullets and buckshot work very well. i've killed several big bad dogs that threatened livestock and humans. Killed one of my neighbors pit bulls that threatened me. One day the DEA was in his backyard with metal detectors dressed in Tyvek. The perp ran an auto accessories store that laundered dope money. His fifth felony dope peddling conviction put him away for life

It is my experience that shooting dogs, even the much maligned pit bulls, is not something that should be taken lightly. Unless you are 100% sure they are dangerous to your family (including your own dogs) the best thing to do is try to scare them off & call Animal Control. I always tell people that talk about shooting dogs my experience with this sort of thing.

A friend of mine had chickens & saw a dog roaming around his property. I was there that day watching a football game with him. He jumped out of his chair & decided right then and there that the dog was a threat & needed to be shot. His wife and I both I advised him to not do it. We knew he wasn't a mindless killer type & the dog was really not hurting anything. I told him dogs are not like most other animals, they are different and usually a loved member of someone's family (I admit that I'm a dog person).

He ignored what we said & walked to within 10 feet of the dog with a Ruger Blackhawk 357 Mag revolver & shot it. As we all know instant kills usually happen only in the movies. The dog did not die right away & started yelping & rolling & doing all the other stuff that happens when you shoot things. My friend just stood there horrified of what he had done. Afterwards he felt so much remorse that he literally went nuts. We thought he was going to put the next round in his own head. Needless to say our Sunday was ruined & everyone felt like crap. His wife told me he cried off and on & didn't sleep well for weeks.

If you are anything like my friend I will give you the same advice, don't shoot any dog unless you feel 100% sure it's ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY.

A few years back I was walking my little dog, it was a day when I had to visit the local school on business and had left my pocket gun home. Something I have very seldom done. When I came home, I immediately put on her lease to walk her through my suburban neighbor hood, which is touted by Real Estate Agents for years as one of the safest in the city. (Lol, we are, but still plenty of crime).
As I was walking her, I notice a very large dog, appeared to be a mixture of Rottweiler and something else. As soon as it saw me, it headed my way. At first I was not completely alarmed. But soon realize it was going to attack her and did. I did all I could to stop the attack. I got between her and the other dog and kicked the big dog in the ribs as hard as I could, no effect and I did this several times

All of a sudden my dog slipped out of her collar and started to run. She did not make it very far before the Rottweiler caught up and was on top of her. I instinctively sprinted toward the dog, put both arms out and did a dive into the dog with all my force. Much like a football player. The dog felt it hard. I remember as I went into the dog, I could see it's leg upside down as it did a 360.It startled the dog enough and it ran about 10'. I grabbed my dog, and while on my knee and braced for the next attack.
At that precise time, I noticed movement to my left. It was a Police Officer running full tilt toward me. I saw him going for his holster which contained Pepper spray. It started to spray the dog with little effect. He kept at it over and over until finally it ran home. (Who say's there is not a cop around when you want one) Turns out he was a Traffic Officer, parked for Speeders..

I told him that I normally carry a gun, he said yes, and said if he and been me he would have shot the dog.He was about to do it himself.I make sure I have my gun with me all the time. I also now carry a steel Baton.
Mess with my Dog and you are going down. And I do not much care if you are human or dog. (Ps, I was sore for weeks. especially my Neck)

I agree with you Jeb.
In your case there was definitely a reason to take action. I would have done the same.

My advise is more towards a different situation where for example you find out that your dog jumped the fence and into your neighbor's property & your neighbor shot him just because he "thought' the dog was going to bite somebody or because it simply didn't belong there. That happens way too frequently.

Once when I was about 12 or 13 years old, I was riding my bike over to “Johnson’s ditch” (the local swimming hole) just to see if any of my buddies were hanging out there that afternoon. As I started up the last hill, a couple of medium sized mutts that I’d never seen before came charging out of a driveway, yelling at the tops of their lungs. Then they proceeded to nip at my heels and grab my pants legs as I tried to peddle on up the hill. I didn’t get hurt because I was wearing a pair of high-top boots, but those mutts managed to scare the crap out of me before they got bored and went home.

Well, I don’t like being scared. So when I got to the top of the hill, I stopped and picked up a couple of fist-sized rocks. Then I headed back down the hill at full speed. When I got to the bottom, here came those devils out of that driveway again, and I let fly with the first rock. It hit the asphalt right between the front feet of the lead tormentor, bounced up and hit him right between his hind legs. He immediately sat down, put his nose in the air, and started letting out the most mournful howls I’ve ever heard – all the while scooting around on his butt like a cartoon dog. The other dog stopped and just stood there looking at the one that was suddenly acting so weird.

Neither of those two mutts ever bothered me again. In fact, I’d watch, and if the dog that I’d smacked between his legs with a fist sized rock was on the front porch when I rode by, he would get up and run around behind the house.

I wonder how much that cop, quoted in the video who said to use wasp spray, would agree with the mayor of his city if he decided that the police should carry wasp spray instead of side arms.

Animal lover here, particularly dogs. I found garden hose works pretty good against dogs.

We rescued our last 2 of 3 dogs and just rescued 2 kittens from the animal shelter. No, we train our dogs to be friendly to our "pack/flock/herd" and dogs are protector of our chickens, turkeys and piglets. And soon, kittens.

I have not met a dog I did not like and have attached loose neighbor's dogs (Nice dogs BTW) with a note that we have chickens/turkeys and may have to protect them (Chances are our dogs will confront them first as they have killed everything that has come into our acreage, including gophers). After the notes, they have not returned.

We have done everything possible to not shoot animals that get into our acreage where chickens/turkeys free range (I will shoot around the hawks/eagles with accurate pellet/BB guns that perch on tree branches). Only exception was a cat our dogs did a bad job on and took a headshot with my 10/22 to end its suffering.

If the dogs are not showing aggression, I would assume neighbor's dog taking self for a walk and would work to locate the owner/call the pound.

I have a variant of a "pitbull" and they are sorely misunderstood animals.

It is the responsibility of the owner of the dog to keep care of the dog. Folks like to talk about dogs being members of the family yet there are many that dont treat them as such.

The county I used to live in had fairly stringent laws requiring dogs to be contained either by leash, tie out or fence. The county I currently live in has no such laws and its perfectly legal for folks to just let their dogs roam all over, and they do. It's for that reason that I dont walk my dog on the country road we live off of. We are fortunate to have a half acre fenced in back yard where she can get exercise.

I see passersby dogs literally all the time. None have posed any problem. Most are probably either going back home or hunting dogs waiting to be picked up. Every one I've ever seen has had some kind of collar.

It would take a lot for me to shoot a dog and even if it was warranted I'm sure id feel bad about it afterwards.



Now cats are a different story.

I’ve had LEOs and utility meter readers tell me this does not work. Instead, they have used cheap plastic water pistols filled with 50/50 ammonia and water which they spray directly at the dogs head. Pepper sprays, so they tell me, just make a cloud that can blow back and affect the sprayer. I don’t know as I’ve never been in such a situation.

Small children and your wife against two pit bulls.... Guess who's going to win.

I would first call animal control and speak to the person who is going to address the problem and then again after they have spoken to the owners (if they can be found).

No collars? Have they had their rabies shots, does your state/county require registration?

I personally would not feel bad about shooting two dogs. I would feel very bad if I had to bury my kids or my wife due to a dog attack.

Having been forced to kill a dog before I would say, exhaust other options first if nothing else do what you need to.

Douse 'em down good with skunk scent if they will let you. Option #2, give 'em a good dose of the antisieze right under their chin at the top of their throat where they can't reach. They'll take that home and have it smeared all over the house ruining furniture all over the house by the time the owner figures out where it is coming from. Then they will pay more attention to where their animal is roaming from now on.

We had 2 problem dogs from a neighbor renting almost 1 mile away. One was alpha and the other played along. I was attacked on the farm while changing a flat tire and fender them off with a wood pallet and tire iron (gladiator me). Started carrying at all times and a couple weeks later encountered them while clearing brush and fixing some down fence.
Mr alpha a pit mix is buried by that fence since I had a loader tractor right there. I love dogs but didn’t feel bad about that one. The dog owner moved out not long after and left a toxic meth lab mess behind for the landlord.

I recommend just the exact opposite. Never say anything to any one or you are the first person to get fingered from now on no matter what or where it happens to any one.

The stream type spray instead of the fog will resist the wind. Not a hurricane mind you but a breeze won't blow it back on you. It's like a very strong squirt gun vs something like fly spray.

Yep, you want a can that shoots a stream. You also want to practice a spray or two and check to make sure the propellant hasn't leaked out every now and then

Don't blame the folks who kill dogs. Blame the owners who allow their dangerous and untrained dogs to run amuck. Every year in Oklahoma there are numerous attacks on humans, pets and livestock by dangerous dogs. Very seldom is a dog owner here jailed for failure to control their dog that attacked humans. The political hacks here steadfastly refuse to pass laws that would hold owners responsible for attacks by their vicious dogs.

BB gun works great or me. Zing them good one time and you won't see them again. Just be careful not to aim for their head and accidently hit them in a eye. That can cause permanent damage and then the owner will give you trouble.

A accurate medium power Air Rifle with a shot to their rear end will usually keep an annoying animal away without permanent harm, repeat visits may require more advanced actions but I agree that discussions with others can backfire on you. Shooting Pets in NC can be a felony depending on the circumstances.
