Walmart Shooting in El Paso

One article posted a surveillance photo of a man with an ak47 or ak clone. One cnn interview had at least one person in the vicinity with a ccw. Details are still coming in.

And what did that one person in the vicinity do?

It is Texas. There will be LTC holders and car carriers in the "vicinity" of most such mass shootings. The question is, what did they do to stop it?

So far, what I can find is that one was in the area and did nothing. So the fact that one was there is meaningless.

The guy in another store claimed to take his gun and run to the parking lot...

...which means he never got close to the shooting inside Walmart. He was a non-entity in the event.

Here in El Paso, it's pretty strongly anti-gun. So even though it's Texas, there's not as many people packing as you might think.

Patrick Crusius is apparently the suspect in custody, his weapon was a rifle and if the picture was in fact him then yes it was something resembling an AK-47.

Unfortunately this is just going to turn into a political issue with neither side doing anything actually productive.

Well, the brief coverage I watched on Fox was mostly 'experts' talking about mental disorders and shooters hitting soft targets.

I also think one party will side with gun rights while the other will be screaming for an AWB. With the election next year I doubt there will be an AWB, at least until after that.

Could be a ban on weapons/ammo from Russia though, they're always looking to sanction Russia recently.

Yeah I wasn't impressed with our local media coverage. I watched one lady try to explain that a rifle is different than an AR (her idea of a rifle sounded like a scoped bolt action rifle maybe), not realizing that rifle is in fact a very broad category of firearm that encompasses the AR platform.

On another note I don't think that the AWB vs Mental Illness debate is very productive.

1. Would improved mental health care make things like this happen less? I honestly couldn't say, because no one actually tries to implement anything like that, it's just a talking point for them.

2. Would an Assault Weapons Ban stop things like this? Well considering that people have done this same **** with handguns I'm going to go with a firm no.

And shotguns. And hijacked planes. And delivery vans packed full of fertilizer. The tool is irrelevant.

Evil will find a way to express itself if there is a will to do so. Only the vigilant, timely intervention of law enforcement or armed resistors can stop it- and even then usually once it has begun.
