There is a lot of push. We have seen it before and no new laws. Not sure what is going on this time. Trump seems to want to link some gun control to immigration. What are the pros and cons to UBGC's? I have been watching Palmetto state armory and just before the shooting I saw that they were selling complete uppers with BCG and CH for 179. Crazy cheap. Now they are priced at 219 and sold out. One never knows when it will be a big run on guns like in 2012. My guess is before the election there will be more runs on guns.

Statistically, there is no upside if the goal is to reduce crime.

The media has again whipped everyone into a frenzy.

Trump seems to be endorsing universal background checks and "red flag" laws. And with the NRA in disarray, he may well get those things. I'm worried about an AWB with no grandfathering. That may come after the 2020 election (and possibly earlier at the state level).

UBGC's won't mean a thing to criminals unless the evasion of UBGC's (by theft, black market purchase, etc.) becomes a separate crime that cannot be bargained away. If illegal acquisition of a firearm tacks on five years then there might be a positive effect... and lawyers will scream bloody murder!

Why is the NRA in disarray?

There's a big controversy over embezzlement and several NRA officials have resigned claiming Wayne Lapierre has been using funds for his personal use. That's the extend that I am aware of but a lot of members are withholding donations until the situation is dealt with.

In regards to the background checks, one could only hope the proposed bill gets tied with immigration because it would most likely mean it won't pass (enough congress critters voting No either on the background check front OR the immigration front).

The Universal Background Check That was proposed was basically the same as what we put up with here in California. Ten day waiting periods for ALL gun purchases.

A reference to the 10 day waiting period was written towards the bottom of this article that was published this morning after Trump’s speech.

FROM THE ARTICLE:
Trump has, in the past, called for strengthening the federal background check system, and in 2018 signed legislation to increase federal agency sharing into the system. But the president has resisted Democratic calls to toughen other gun control laws. In February, the House approved bipartisan legislation that would require federal background checks for all gun sales and transfers, and approved legislation that would allow a review period of up to 10 days for background checks on firearm purchases.

But the White House threatened a presidential veto if those measures passed Congress.

No sense in scaring folks about something that may not happen, and we have had enough arguments about the NRA lately.
