I'm kicking around the idea of getting a pound of IMR 7828 to load for my 338 win mag. I understand that both powders are interchangable and that the advantage of the SSC is that it more efficiently fills cases thus reducing load density and it meters better out of a powder measure. Metering is not a benefit to me as I'm a low volume reloader so my question is will I find an actual, practical advantage to waiting to find a can of SSC vs being able to immediately pick up a can of the regular 7828 sitting on the sporting goods self as I write this. Looking for pros, cons, and general feedback. Thanks

The short answer is no. IMR 7828 is a great magnum powder in either form. You may crunch a little more powder as workups go toward maximum or compressed charges with the regular vs the SSC. However, 338WM is a relatively large case with a large mouth. It's when you try to stuff IMR 7828 into say... 243 Winchester... that the SSC is much more user friendly.

But for the size there is no difference in the powder itself. If you don't need the smaller size buy the one you can get without a wait.

Thanks guys. I presumed it would make little difference in my application. I may pick up a can tomorrow.

The only detractor l would find is usimg a volumetric measure it would have to be adjusted for the smaller volume. Then verify the correct weight with each can. I would use whatever you use now if it goes in OK already.
