I ordered one last year (field grade) and liked it so much I re-ordered about 3 weeks ago a (service grade) rifle.
I'm concerned about the turn around time now.
Any info about when you ordered and when it got delivered to you will soothe my anticipation.
I'm still waiting for the catsup to leave the bottle. :)

I ordered mine back in March (I believe), took 30 days from the day I NDA mailed my paperwork to the day my rifle was on the porch.

Are you familiar with the CMP forum?

In this (very long) thread people report, after getting their Garand, when they placed the order. It's pretty easy to keep a running tally on what delivery timelines are doing.

I ordered a Service Grade Jun'18 and it showed up latter part of Sep'18. Deliveries at that time were taking 3-4 months and, without that info, I would have gone crazy.

I received an e-mail from CMP about my order today. They say my order was received on 7-8-19. I recall sending it on about the 1st. No big deal as it might have had to take it's turn on being opened. I now have an order number and a customer number. It says "ship ASAP"
If you look at what is available you will see that they are sold out of almost everything. I wonder if that means they are sold out of everything that is ready to be shipped. They signify that what I ordered is sold out also. Hmmm.
M1's are like potato chips...............

Here it is the next day. My $850 grade rifle was listed to be shipped out "ASAP" yesterday. Today, FEDEX called to tell me my rifle would be delivered to me tomorrow. MY e-mail to them was timed just right. Pictures to follow.

Fantastic!

When I got mine (I know virtually nothing about Garands. I just wanted to have one for historical reasons as well as plinking with it) I posted pics in the CMP Forum and folks chimed in with all sorts of interesting tidbits about it.

In fact, one person in particular noticed the bolt I'd gotten was not supposed to be used. That lot was condemned and was supposed to be taken out of service. I brought this up to the CMP, they said that was correct and that they'd made a mistake by not removing it. They paid for return shipping, put in a different bolt, re-checked headspace and fired it - and got it back to me very quickly.

I can't say enough good things about both the CMP Forum and the CMP itself.

Enjoy your (new to you) piece of history! They're wonderful.

It's a Springfield. The throat is a 1 and the muzzle is a 2. I figure the 2 means that 2 bullets can go down the muzzle side by side. I ordered the $850 service grade rifle..... they charged me $750? What happened? The serial number is 1.1xxxx million. I figure that is WWII vintage, but will have to Google it for sure. The stock is brand new.. I noticed the cmp stamp on it.
I just got home from the range, but did not take the Garand as I would have had to run a rod down it first and didn't have the time.
This time they sent 1 clip with the gun. Last time I got one of these they shorted me the clip. NO sweat as I have plenty of em'
Hey Gunny???? is this rifle too pretty to shoot? Should I wax the stock? Thanks

The CMP website shows their "Luck of the draw" Service Grade M1 as $750.

They have a Special Grade *Field Grade* for $850.

I don't see a Service Grade for $850.

I have seen two different price lists. Ordered from one and the second had all the "SOLD OUT" notes that the first list did not have.
My only concern with this old rifle is the way it shoots. The bore gauge readings were not explained, but I hope the 2 figure is not "worn out."
I was joking about the 2 bullets thing :) The stock is beautiful.

0 (to possibly about 2) is new. 2 is practically new. 5 is well worn. 10 is shot out. Some brand new barrels will gauge 2. Some 5s will shoot as precisely as when they were new.

The rifle looks great.
I would rub in a polish coat of BLO and wax it a few days later.
Put some rounds down range and let us know how it shoots.

A 1/2 Bbl is essentially new.

A 1.1M S/N Springfield dates to JAN43.

Pull back and lock the action open and check the Bbl Manufacture and date under the Op-rod.

The Bore Numbers.

Each bore number represents 0.001" out from bore (0.300")

Given reasonable shooting practices:

- Each Throat number represents 2,000 rounds worth of erosion (empirically determined through testing by the GCA)
- Each Muzzle number represents 6,000 rounds worth of erosion (1/3 the rate of Throat erosion)

These are the U.S. Army's service requirements for Throat erosion (no Muzzle erosion was specified)

Figure-23.jpg
Storage for reissue.: < 0.305" (TE5)
Shipped to Combat: < 0.306" (TE6)
In Combat. . . . . . . : < 0.310" (TE10)

So, given a production machine tool tolerance of +/- 0.001" on the Throat, and half that (+/- 0.0005") on the Muzzle?

A 1/2 Bbl. could be reasonably estimated at ~ 3,000 rounds from an original 0.5/0.5 Bbl, with ~ 8-12,000 rounds (0.306-8") of reasonable accuracy left.

As for the $850 Service Grade..?

Don't see one on the CMP Sales Page.

As for the Stock?

Dismount the wood, give it light coats of BLO, and then put it out in the hot sun to percolate.

When it quits, bring it into the shade to cool, and then re-coat/percolate.

This will feed the stock quickly, and get it on its way to a caramel finish.

Don't wax it until you are completely finished w/ the initial BLO... if at all.

EDIT:

P.S

"...if it slides... Grease it!"

The barrel is obviously brand new as there has not been 2-3 shells fired over the gas port. I just stripped it down. Everything looks brand new, tight, or super parkerized. No sign of wear is apparent. Barrel code
SA F853544B 2 55 A218A followed by a rather large letter "P" and then a tiny letter "M" (the "P" is at a strange angle)
Garandimal- what is the de-code of the barrel numbers?
I am more enamored of this piece since I took it apart. This gun is a real work of ART! :) but it could have been built by Charlie.
Jeez! shoulda' ordered two of em'
BTW we have no hot sun in Michigan to bake the BLO. I'll just have to let it set a while.

Pretty unusual to have those bore numbers on a post war SA NOS Bbl.

Not Garandimal, SA is the Springfield Armory
F853544B is the drawing and its size
2 55 is the date February 1955
A218A is the heat treat lot number
You will see similar markings on other parts large enough to get stamped.

Thanks for the good information on my new toy. I'll have to keep it torn down on the work bench for a few weeks while the linseed oil cures.
I appreciate the expertise displayed by you guyz. Some of you sound like you still sleep with your M1's. Glad to meet you!

The CMP wait isn't much of a wait. Wait time for the old DCM Garands was measured in years; got mine in just under a year (~1982) after they relented to the backlog & freed up a bunch. It was a new, as packed, completely re-arsenaled Winchester complete with all the sealed issue items - $121.93. It was amazing, and like an idiot I sold it later ($500) to finance a driveway to my house back in the woods. Stupidity now, necessity then... :(

Hey Maj- I also shot in the DCM quals at my gun club in St. Charles MO back in about 1979. I believe the wait was 9 months. I also got a beauty and it was $146 ( I think). I sold that one for $900. What a mistake.
The two guys that shot with me from work also got their M1's. As far as I know everyone that shot in the quals got their rifle.
According to the Popular Science magazine Uncle Sam paid $77 each for these rifles.
