i always liked the 458A my dad had a few. he did one for a guy on a rem model seven. i was thinking off building one but have my siamese mauser 45/70. i will see if he has any loads written down. that 250 barnes hp would be nasty out of the american. i think dad used 7rm brass.

It was a gunbroker find so I don’t have it on hand yet. Did you have any issues on feeding? And data is appreciated if you have!

no the feeding was good on them all. one was a 09 argentine the other was a cut down p14. the rem seven was good to. that rifle looks like with little work it will be a fine rifle, mostly the stock. we used barnes originals swifts 400s and remington sp 405s, the new bullets for the 458 socom would be great to use.
cant find the data right now, dad said 51gr under 4198 for a 400gr bullets. he said just use the starting loads for the 450 marlin.

Yeah that’s what I was figuring with the 450 marlin data. Being on a m96 action I wouldn’t want to push it too hard past 51k which is the 6.5x55SAAMI spec. Should make a nice close up big game rifle.

The Argentine and p14 sound awesome

ya wish we still had them. great thing about the 458s they don't need to be going fast, i have killed a lot of deer with plinking loads that are under 1000 fps. dad was working on a barrel for his savage striker, but sold when he got divorced, i really wanted to try that out believe it was a 14'' barrel. dang you now i may have to get a 458 socom to quench my thirst now lol.

i have a type 99 barreled action that would make a nice 458 american.

Use any .45-70 load data (maybe skip the Ruger #1 load section) Basically the .458 American is a belted rimless .45-70 that will feed in Bolt guns. Most any range pickup belted rimless casings can be cut down to make brass. Remington 7mm magnum or .300 WinMag are probably the easiest to find. Cast bullets in the 350-425 grain range sized .460 will do anything you want a rifle to do at 1500-1600 fps. Anything more and your shoulder will tell you otherwise.

That is not a 458X2 in the pic in the OP. It is a 450 Marlin. Notice the difference in the width of the belts on the shorter cartridge and the 458 WM next to it.

Good eyes! Once you pointed that out I checked closer and agree with you. The Marlin belt was “taller” than the “H&H standard” belt found on the others

Older editions of Cartridges of the World should have load data. Frank Barnes developed the cartridge and wrote the book.

Stay safe.

:)

And when hunting Buicks larger than Le Sabre/ Lucerne class, be sure to aim for the water pump/ radiator. I've seen them go a long ways with out any oil in them, so a DRT is not guaranteed with a Block shot.
Especially so with a Quarter Panel Away shot...:D

That sure looks like fun.

The .450 Marlin was designed with a longer belt so it would not headspace in other belted magnum rifles and as such would not function. Other wise it could be chambered in a .300 Win Mag or even .264 Win Mag etc.

Don't know where you got that pic in the OP @Jessesky but that is basically a stock photo for .450 Marlin.

What would be fun is a .458x1.8" that could be used for hunting in many straight wall states. That way you could have access to actual rifle bullets in .458 diameter and not the .451/.452 handgun bullets that .450 Bushmaster uses.

I googled 458x2” and it popped up. I hadn’t noticed the longer belt. Good catch

The good thing is the chamber can be recut on a 458X2 to 458 Marlin to take advantage of the more (more being a relative term in this case) readily available factory ammo for the Marlin.

i believe it was originally designed to be used in the Remington 600 actions with magnum bolt face (6.5 and .350 Remington Magnum). They needed to shortened cases to fit in the magazine.
