Advice on .22 revolvers SW/Ruger/Taurus

My Taurus 94 was a stinker. Cylinder bound up. Adjustable sights adjusted themselves to the ground. My SW 317LS was a nice light weight package but I couldn't stand the trigger pull which was set at dinosaur level. I settled on a Ruger SS Bearcat for a revolver plinker. As as single action, it's not a quick gun to reload but it's nice.

My wife has one and it is nice! I sent the Ruger CEO a request a year to two back to bring it out in a 9mm which I think would be the ideal trail gun.

I only own 1 Taurus but it happens to be the 992 DA .22/.22m convertible. The trigger is about what you would expect, heavy & stiff, with the SA just so so. That being said, I picked it up for $300 used but looked to be unfired. I definitely have gotten my money's worth of enjoyment, which was my main goal. If I really wanted a fine shooter I'd probably go with a S&W or hold out for a Dan Wesson pistol pack.

Here is a Taurus you may never of heard of. A model 96. Its like a K-Frame S&W 22lr. I had one way back in the early 1990s and stupidly sold it. Here is one on GB that is an earlier model than the one I had. Mine didn't have the striations in the cylinder flutes like this one. If you don't like this one keep checking. They come up for sale ever so often.

I really like my older model 17s and k-22s. I have a 17-5 and a 617 both have full underlug barrels. The extra weight up front helps keep the gun on target. I have a 1980 vintage single six that rarely gets shot, and a Taurus 94 9 shot that is also a good shooter with a good trigger.

Spend some money on an older 17 or k-22, expensive but worth it, you will be pleased.

The gerth of the ruger is not required for 22lr, the smoother action of the smith will be appreciated. For magnum calibers ruger is my favorite, for lighter stuff smith gets the nod. As for the other option it wouldnt even be a consideration for me.

I find the 617 too large for such a small round. In my hand, I prefer something like the 63

This^^ Except for me, I've never shot a 617 but had a new Ruger 100, which I later sold because it was just too massive a gun to shoot 22 out of. I'd get tired of the weight long before I wanted to stop shooting and it was harder to hold off-hand on target. I much prefer a 63 or a 34 for plinking 22LR.

FWIW, I also bought an LCR 22LR and couldn't hit the broad side of a barn due to the lousy trigger on the thing.

Ruger, S&W and Charters Arms 22.
The last one has a great customer service and affordable prices.
Taurus recently acquired Heritage Arms so both are out of my suggestion.

617s aren't cheap, but the one I've shot is like magic.

Hi-Standard make a very nice little 22 revolver back in the day; a little smaller than a K frame but not a total wisp of a pistol. It was about the perfect size for a rimfire. Held 9 shots too. It didn't shoot as well as the S&W, but I prefer shooting it because it feels more like a rimfire. And besides, never missing with the Smith kind of gets boring...

I love my 357 GP100s but wouldn't get one in 22cal due to unnecessary weight(40 oz/4"). If money wasn't an issue I'd go for a Smith 617 over the GP or Taurus. If you don't mind SA a Ruger Single Six can be found used at reasonable prices if you look around. I found this 3 screw 1967 Single Six for $350 a couple years ago. It's a nice plinker.
