I have acquired a 1954 Colt det spl with stag grips, that appears to be stainless steel. I have many SS handguns, and the finish is identical to these, although don't think Colt put them out in SS. How can I find out how this gun left the factory to be sure of what I've got? Thanks for any help.

Has to be a chrome finish of some sort. Nickel doesn't look like stainless. You can pay the fee and get a letter from Colt.

A factory letter would tell you the original finish. IIRC, letters are over 100 nowadays.

A 1954 nickel D.S. would have a matte finish on the top and bottom of the frame (down through to include the grip)
as well as in the cylinder flutes.
Sort of a stainless look? on a clean example.

Sure sounds like it's should be a nickel finish though if it's a matte finish overall someone may have had it refinished in electroless nickel or had it hard chrome plated.

My Beretta Model 70S was originally blued from the factory but problems with the bluing made me have it hard chrome plated by Metalife a number of years ago.
