Getting ready for my first Big Bore AR.

I wondered when somebody was going to chime in with that one

I'd be curious in hearing what swayed the OPs caliber decision.
458 SOCOM just sounds so much better then 450 Bushmaster. ;) And it’s bigger. But the main reason for going with the 458 is that it was used by the military and served well. A friend of mine used it in Afghanistan. They had special rounds just for stopping vehicles.

Guess that depends on if you have a 450 Bushmaster LOL! Just kidding Gunny! Anyway, I’m taking my 450 to the range tomorrow to shoot for groups. I want to see how those XXTreme barrels shoot. Just have a handful of rounds through it, and it may need more break in.

This is a temporary deal, ends Nov 18, 2018, but Primary Arms will throw in a stripped upper receiver and a charge handle with their 16" KAK 458 barrel for $135. Seems reasonable, but I have no experience with that barrel.

I built mine this summer also, a .458Socom. One factor I considered is that you can't accidentally put a .458S into a 5.56 rifle.

I wanted to try a side charger and I love it. The upper I settled on is dual with both the traditional rear as well as the side charger.

My list: Nothing Fancy BUT I did go with Tromix barrel and bolt as they are pretty much the original 458S people.

Anderson Lower with mostly Anderson LPK
Magpul stock
CMT Upper dual charging
Bear Creek BCG
Tromix barrel and bolt
GLFA Muzzle Brake Devastator
Aero Precision hand guard

I sent this as a PM to Gunny, then thought I would throw it out to the masses:

Having read an participated in your Big Bore .458 SOCOM thread, I recollect you using the Brownell Bolt carrier assembly. I did too, and in reading reviews came upon an interesting tidbit and was wondering what your findings were.

A few were having some sort of cycling problems, I think it was with extraction? Well one fellow posted a response, stating he had spoken with the alleged inventor from Tromix who suggested an easy "fix" short of buying his bolt. He said to remove the little rubber o-ring from the extractor spring and reinstall the spring in upside down....I think he said it was too strong as was?

Question I have is if you had any issues with this bolt carrier assembly or heard of this modification? You can see this conversation in the reviews on the Brownell site...I'm sure Tromix has forgotten more than I know, but also knowing you use this bolt I thought I would inquire.

My gun is done, but have not fired it yet....

Thanks for any input. I think I will CC a copy of this message to the thread, maybe I am not the only one!

Gunny and RusselC you folks have had your delta team Tactical .458s for quite a while now, how do they function and how well do they shoot.
Have you had any problems with the bolts of extractors.
Do they feed ok with std mags or did you have to make modifications.
I have one of their assembled uppers in bound with 16 inch barrel 1-14 twist I got assembled for $174. Should be here before monday possibly as early as friday.

I bought some 325gr ammo from Black Butterfly and it functioned perfectly. I've loaded 405, 325 and 300 gr bullets so far. I really like the Hornady FTX 325 gr bullets, and have had no feeding problems. And they shoot great.
This was my worst group at 25 yds with open sights.

I have some Nosler Ballistic Silvertip 300 gr. bullets that I need to workup some loads with. My first test loads, I had some feeding issues that were my fault, didn't have mu dies adjusted right.
I've been using Brownell's 20 round AR mags with Magpul followers. They hold six rounds and feed great. The 458 SOCOM was designed to feed from a standard GI AR mag.

I've got about 100 rounds through mine and it functions great. 40 rounds were Black Butterfly and the rest were my reloads. All were 325gr FTX bullets. Am going hog hunting in two weeks with it.

I use standard AR mags, but I changed out the follower to a single stack on. Don't know that I needed to but I feel better that way. Dedicated two, metal, 20rd mags and one 5 round mag to the 458 use. The reason for the 5 round is in case I go somewhere that has mag capacity limits for hunting. Of course I only get 7 and 3 rounds respectfully in them.

I still haven't fired mine!

The joy is only tempered by the realization that every shot is sending $2 down range. (Closer to $1 if you reload)

I stopped by Akyls Defense the other day and the had one of the 458 Muzzle breaks in stock.
They said they may do another small run of the before the Spring.
My break was the first one made and in the white. The ones they are selling have a nitride finish.

To follow up on my post here. Yes I went hog hunting. Yes I got my hog. The .458 did it's job. DRT. Impressed the guides and my fellow shooters.

Okay, two accessories I want. Really, want. Thermal sights, for hogs of course. And a silencer.

SILENCER. Okay, Suppressor for those who are picky.

Anyone tried the SilencerCo Hybrid 46?
