Please don’t delve into politics or overly wild scenarios here; that is not my intent either. What I’ve been contemplating lately is what, if anything, might the future of AR parts be if the serialized portion were banned? With all of the manufacturers tied to an platform I feel a back up plan is worth a look, too bad engineering is not my strong suit.

Over the past decade or more of participating in forums such as this I’ve seen some inspirational projects from innovative minds and I’m wondering: if laws changed, has anyone thought through a bolt action or similar receiver/chassis to salvage all of our collective uppers or am I overly optimistic about recycling? Accessories like rails and BUIS are finding homes with other platforms, any hope for the rest beyond scrap value?

In any case I’d love to believe that if the scenario plays out I’ll still have something of value left.

Depending on the language, the easiest "permanent" solution is to flip your gas tube over and cut it off, effectively blocking the gas flow in the block, and turning the rifle into a straight-pull bolt action. Welding would be more permanent, but could cause issues. Drilling and tapping the gas tube hole for a set screw would be another option. Again, depending on language, a furniture change could bring compliance. I know Scalia's Heller decision has been scrutinized, but, to me, the "in common use" clause is going to be difficult to overcome, though IANAL.

You could always craft some dull-sounding (I imagine) wind chimes, ;)

Actually AR uppers and lowers put out quite a distinct and pleasant metallic sound when banged together and / or dropped on a concrete floor.

I can hear it now...just as memorable as it was the other day when I knocked them off the bench and onto the floor the other day...:fire:

I was more hoping for a traditional though composite stock lower chassis and maybe a “friendly” 5-round AICS mag. Is that too much to ask of you guys? Something side-charging minus the thing that goes up and semi-auto instead of “full semi-auto”. :neener:

IMO none of those things would fly. You'd have to use a virgin barrel that never had the gas port drilled.

If you can pin and weld a flash hider to keep a 14.5" barrel from being an SBR, why couldn't a welded gas port be a bolt-action?

Maybe craft the bolt catch to stop forward travel after every shot so it requires manual bolt release for each shot?
I'm reasonably sure most of us won't have to worry about it though. At the State level.....probably.
