Nice. Being a K frame though, it should have been manufactured with a 9 shot cylinder like the old Sentinel.
I would like to see a 651 with an 8 shot cylinder and a 3" bbl.
 
Interesting. I would probably still lean towards the Single Nine....unless I could find a nice pre-lock 648.

The lock will never go away. That is for certain, I’m sure. I have 2 revolvers with the locks. A 327 Night Guard and a model 60 Pro. Neither has ever had the lock engage while firing with hot .357 Magnum loads. If .357 in a J frame won’t budge it I doubt anything will, except the key that comes with it.
 
I'd say it's not a re-release, as the original was a 6 shot with no lock. They can keep trying, but as much as I used to love S&W, I wouldn't buy that for a hundred bucks.
 
Saw a Taurus 941 at the gun show last weekend for $350. Would have bought that before a new Smith. Probably should have bought it but I’m saving the shekels for another lathe.

I have one made several years ago WITH a lock and a six-shot cylinder (648-2). I have a two power Leupold handgun scope mounted on it. It is a wonderful dedicated squirrel gun that (amazingly) shoots to the same point of aim with both WMR and WRF ammo at 50 yards. Way to heavy for a carry gun, but extremely accurate off the bench at long range and the squirrels hate it! The lock (I have both lock and no lock Smiths) is certainly not a factor on this type of gun.
 
Agreed it doesn't matter on a non carry gun. Except for the subtle frame bulge that most people cant notice, but I notice immediately. When lock guns are for sale, a right side only pic is posted. Trying to hide it ya know...I can still tell immediately. Don't like it.

I had a 941 once. It would only fire 16 rds. before the cylinder would lock up. Sent back to Taurus, came back with the same problem.
Took a loss on it and traded for a Ruger Mark III.
By the way, I only paid $300.00 for mine NIB at my LGS.

If it’s a six or seven-shot, give us a J frame 4” kit gun in .22 mag to go with the 8- shot .22 LR.

The full lug barrels are great on the 586/686, and on the 629. But on a “packin” gun like a K-frame rimfire, please give us the option of a lighter weight barrel. I’ll bet it'll sell more units than the full lug. :thumbup:

In any event it is a nice looking revolver, I do hope they stick around.

I agree wholeheartedly.

I thought this was a pretty cool revolver until I looked at the weight of it. I also handled the 4 and 6 inch new models of the 617. Way too much weight for me. My model 17-3 with a 6” barrel is almost reasonable in weight but 39 and 44 ounces for the 617s is silly. Especially since all that weight is barrel weight.

I am thinking a model 63 is in my future for .22 LR. I think a .22 Magnum can wait. I do not like “Convertible” guns that have 2 cylinders. Been there, done that with a Single Six. Magnum accuracy was marginal and Long Rifle accuracy was poor. I did not like having to keep track of an extra cylinder, either. I probably got a lemon because a lot of folks I know just love their Single Sixes.
 
Same here, I also have a 6” M-17-3 and it is just about the prefect weight. A 4” with more capacity would carry in the woods very nicely.

I have the 317 airweight, and other than a bit of a heavy trigger pull and the not-quite-target-grade sights it’s a great hiking-carry gun. :thumbup:

I think the 8-shot 941 Taurus would be a better hiking- carry gun if it had the 94 style barrel, as it also has a full lug making it a bit heavy. :(
