FWIW, Assault weapons now include all semi-automatic firearms

That's because all most politicians care about is holding onto power by being re-elected. The Tweetmaister just sends out messages to see what will fly and what will fall and sink. Sensing something has to be done he has sent his daughter to determine what stance can be made about guns while expanding electorate base and keeping the one he has.

Your post above is the truth. Other presidents sent up trial ballon via leaks to the Wapo or NYT, Trump tweets to buy time to figure out what to do. I think that the 2A is more or less a sideshow for him (and most Republican presidents aside from maybe Reagan) with the economy and reorganizing global trading patterns being his number one focus. On the other hand, he is smart enough to be persuaded by enough adamant opposition if he thinks it will cost him reelection.

Yes, call them Modern Sporting Rifles as that will make all the difference in the debate.

Fox News Poll:

35.-37.
Banning assault rifles and semi-automatic weapons
13 Aug 19 67% in favor 27% opposed.

I've said repeatedly the definitional battle is lost. You need to justify why the guns are necessary for the RKBA. Saying they are guaranteed as God Given Right, won't move the social consensus. This law is technically stupid and written by folks who don't understand firearms. Maybe that is a good thing. It's weird mix of old laws and some new provisions.
"Modern sporting rifle" is a stupid name. Semi-automatic rifle is technically correct and value-free.

Maybe we should all try marching in angry hordes, seems to be the way to get things done. Or maybe walking around with semi automatic rifles out in public places performing those lovely 2A audits will win people over.

The problem is we dont have good representation and alot of us sit on our hands, myself included. It's going to take more than donating a few bucks to various RKBA orgs to even have a chance at swaying public opinion.... some media coverage of people saving their own lives with these guns wouldn't hurt. Like some "The armed citizen" accounts except put them in a place non NRA members will see...
Definitely publicize repeatedly the guy who shot the Texas church shooter. And the recent homeowner who took out 2 of the 4 BGs who invaded his home. Lefties always imagine if someone breaks into your house it will only be one person.

I'm beginning to doubt that any legislation will pass the senate except a grant to states to get the states to pass red flag laws. Possibly not even that.

With the number of Republican senators up for re-election this year and the outcome of the presidential election on the line, I think the recent polling will will out and the politicians will just bloviate and then move on to other matters.

However, everyone still needs to keep up the pressure in every way possible to support our RKBA.

Yep! Let's continue to attack our friends and the GOP, NRA, Trump, Reagan etc.. Nancy Pelosi and Chuckie Shumer will love you.

That's nonsensical. You need to understand history. If history conflicts with your mythological view of some figures and the actions in the past, how does that help?

Assault weapons have now been defined as all nearly all semi-automatic weapons including pistols in a proposed bill with nearly...
Same old antis, talk about one thing, write the bill to include much more. Same thing they did with "Cheap" Saturday Night Specials" when they wrote the bill in a way that would ban many fine Colts & Smiths that were not in any way the cheap saturday night specials they said were the issue. We still have all the SNSs by the way.

And by the way, why can't we simply talk about how the bill is being written and the people pushing the bill without the usual mud slinging and the 'your side is just as anti as my side crap.

Never mind, I know the answer. :)

There was NEVER any serious doubt that this was ALWAYS about an absolute governmental monopoly on the means of armed force. Everything else is just deceit.

The only "deal" to be had is them having guns and you NOT.
Slightly off-topic to this thread, rather about red-flag laws: Several people have recently pointed out that if a person really poses an imminent danger to others, he or she should be involuntarily committed. (For which there are already laws, but don't confuse with the facts the people whose minds are already made up.) If Nik Cruz hadn't been able to get a gun he would have used a couple of machetes or learned how to make a pressure cooker bomb.

You should not really put your trust in politicians or even political party's words but only their actions. Whatever he did out of office, he did sign the FOPA in 1986 which arguably is one of the few laws that actually fixed a few issues that the GCA of 1968 had in a positive way and included greater protections for the 2A when traveling and for other issues but it did have the Hughes Amendment closing the select fire registry. The NRA, among others, felt that sacrifice was worth the rest of the Bill.

People change out of office and it is possible that an emotional appeal from Sarah Brady swayed a Reagan who was finally diagnosed with Alzheimers in 1994 but some argue that it was happening well before that. https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/...hen-did-reagans-first-signs-alzheimers-appear It was definitely clear that he was not the person that he was in his first term.

It's almost certain that an AWB would grandfather existing ones. Stock up now and profit handsomely!
That's in no way "certain". In fact, it's quite the opposite.

Eric Swalwell is the new "normal". There's no longer a "fringe" to the movement for raciall invidious gun controls. It's like space, it just goes on without limit. They want to TAKE your guns, and they'd be tickled pink if they could kill you in the process.

I wouldn't put it past them to try to ban most handguns and dare the Supreme Court to stop them, since MOST handguns today are semi-automatic firearms that can take ANY sized magazine, whether it actually works or not.

Unfortunately, there will always be a few gun owners on the left that will attack basicaly pro-gun conservatives regardless of how much they have done for our side.

Read the bills that have been introduced! That's a lot better indicator than what Swalwell says, who's an outlier even among the Democrats.
Those bills are just that, BILLS. They won't pass ANYTHING that doesn't materially HURT gun owners.

Of course you'd have to be really foolish to believe they're the end. They're just the MEANS to an end.

In a couple of weeks, Swallwel will be the CONSERVATIVE on racially invidious gun controls.

I figured they would all be machineguns before assault weapons because any semi can be bump fired...

I'm continually amazed at how many folks get worked up over bill's that are "introduced".
Introduced bills are opening gambits. They are the "maximum demands" or "wish lists" for upcoming legislation. They may be watered down in committee consideration, but they are hardly ever made stricter.

It's very telling that the antigunners would include grandfathering in their "opening gambit." Normally you would think they would reserve it as a possible later sop to gunowners. (Which, BTW, is exactly what's happening in Virginia with Gov. Northam's state-level AWB bill. No grandfathering.)

The truth of the matter is that any AWB with grandfathering is toothless, because of the huge number of such weapons already out there. This is not 1994.
