I bought a Sig 938 Extreme over a year ago. It's taken me a while to warm up to but I've started carrying it and want to carry it more. I've never liked the way the magazine base plate on the Extreme protrudes from the back of the magazine. In addition to looking weird and feeling weird, this protrusion rubs against my palm when the magazine is released preventing the magazine from falling away cleanly during a "combat" reload. See picture below. When I became aware of the 938 Legion one of the first things I noticed is the magazine base plate on the Legion lacks this protrusion.

I've been considering selling the Extreme and replacing it with a Legion. However, as I evaluate the magazine and magwell on the Legion I have discovered that the Legion magwell only has one screw holding it in place. See picture below. This doesn't seem very rugged to me and I'm now torn between living with the protruding magazine base plate on the standard 938 or taking my chances with the Legion and it's one and only attachment screw on the magwell.

I talked to Sig today and they confirm the allen head screw on the Legion magwell screws into the bottom of the standard mainspring housing. The mainspring housing is pinned in place with a dowel running through the frame but the Legion magwell only has this one attachment point to hold it in place. I've attached Sig's schematic for the standard 238/938 as a visual aid. See below.

Does anyone else have this concern?

Are all the parts in question (magwell, screw, MSH) made from metal?

The allen head screw looks pretty beefy.

If all parts are metal and I wanted peace of mind, I would remove the screw, degrease it and the screw hole, and assemble with a drop of blue or purple Loctite. IIRC< purple is not as strong as blue, but would likely do the trick and keep it from backing out.

I’ve been carrying a P938 Legion since Mayish. My mag funnel hasn’t budged a bit.

Love that gun.

The main spring housing on the Legion has a four sided pyramid protrusion at its base, the mag well has a corresponding indent that prevents it from rotating.
This design would make using a 6 rnd 938 mag awkward on the Legion without the mag well. Changing out the main spring housing of the Legion to a 938 housing would remedy this.

The guy I talked to at Sig said he had recently come over from the assembly side and was familiar with the construction of the 938 and the Legion version. I expressed my concern to him, this little nugget of information would have gone a long way toward easing my concerns. Thanks for the additional information.

Pretty happy w/ the P-938 and std. 6-round mags for micro CCW.
I prefer a 3 finger grip even if the 3rd finger has limited real estate. I'm not a fan of the two finger pinkie tuck-under grip. My 938 with the 7 round magazines fits in my pants pocket if I choose to carry that way.

Well...

For a pistol that will be carried lots, ...but shot little, if at all, in its intended purpose?

For me, form factor outweighs convention.

W/ std. pressure 147 gr. ammo, it's not all that snappy to shoot, and two-fingers gives me more than enough control to shoot the pistol very well.

Would rather have no rest support - for the third finger, than marginal support that screws up the primary two-finger grip, especially for a micro drawn from concealment.

But that's just me.

:D
