Why all the craze of single stacks ?

Yeah most folks don't want to dress around the gun in order to carry more gun.

As an experiment I've been carrying an HK VP9 since April in a PHLster Floodlight holster, by design the holster is an inside the waist band appendix rig made to have retention on a Surefire X300U weapon light. Pistol doesn't matter, if it can mount the light the holster will retain it. So I have a double stack 9mm service sized pistol on my person, with a pretty large weapon light. At this point I am used to it, and it didn't take much adjustment aside from figuring out belt tightness. Note I do wear a gun belt made to support a service sized handgun and mag carriers (Bigfoot Gun Belts 18oz leather with steel core). Since May I have been carrying the pistol with the long slide kit on it since it returned from Primary Machine with an Aimpoint ACRO P-1 slide mounted optic on board. Conceals just fine under a t-shirt or other un-tucked shirt so long as you don't insist on wearing tight clothing, if skinny jeans and hipster tight t-shirts or flannel shirts are your thing my setup isn't going to work though.

I haven't played with carrying a reload as of yet on a regular basis though. On the plus side with 16 rounds on board, I effectively have the same ammo on board as a 1911 carrier with a reload... I just don't have to come off the loud switch and perform a reload to get all 16 out like a 1911 shooter though.
 
I prefer small revolvers or small single-stack autos for CC.

I enjoy shooting my double stacks at the range, though.

It just seems weird how these younger people are all tied up in the single stack world and all. A double stack Glock 17,19 or any 9mm or 45acp isnt that much fatter but you sure have more ammo. Ok , I will stop my "old people" type talk and see what you guys think.

Well...

Single stacks are decidedly lighter and easier to carry.


And then, there is also this reality:

Statistically, the odds of encountering/drawing/firing more than Six(6) rounds to stop the threat, in a self defense situation? Are about 1/6,000.

...Or, only about 66% greater than the odds of ending up a Highway Fatality that same year. (1/10,000)

It did not work for me because I used to be a 260lb and did not want my clothing to be too loose. I bought small pistol with four six round magazines. Had to loose weight to control blood pressure and blood sugar. Still have the same pistol.
 
I've got no hips to hold my pants up. A better belt doesn't help much since I don't have hips for the belt to ride on. Suspenders work but I don't really like suspenders. So while I've tried carrying my Beretta 92 all day, what works best is an LC9. Or my J-frame. I've always found a revolver easier to conceal than a semi-auto and 5 rounds is enough for most of my threat scenarios.

I've got a G27 and it conceals OK. I don't hate double stacks. Carry the G27 to church. But day to day, I prefer the revolver.

Yeppers, I have a real nice Milt Sparks IWB holster that I ordered for my J-frame probably 10 years ago. I decided then to lose some weight so that I wouldn’t have to buy bigger pants and longer belts in order to use my new Milt Sparks holster.
I had my annual Wellness Exam in June this year. The doctor told me to lose some weight because my blood pressure was too danged high. If I keep going, I’ll be wearing my still new Milt Sparks holster by October.:D

Wait what now? Those odds seem INCREDIBLY HIGH. I cannot imagine there is a 1 in 6000 chance of needing to employ ANY level of potentially deadly force for the VAST amount of folks not involved in criminal enterprises.

Indeed, though the 226 conceals quite nice (though I use the 18 round in the gun and a 20 in the pocket). Good fall/winter carry for me, I like a lighter gun when it's hot.
 
I'm pretty much a smaller and lighter kind of guy when it comes to my CCW choices, especially in the warmer summer months. This means a single stack 9mm. like my Kahr CM9 or a 5 shot revolver like my S&W J frames: a Model 649 and a Model 638. Typically I go with an IWB holster and a spare mag or a couple of speed strips.

During the less warmer months when I could be wearing a jacket and vest or a heavier coat, I might carry something like a Colt Commander, Ruger SR9c, or a CZ P01.

I get that but how many folks here in their entire life span have ever needed to deploy a level of force even approaching deadly? Who are not LEO’s, were in military action or were engaged in criminal activities)

I am not outright disputing the number I am just curious as to where it comes from.

1 in 6000 chance, all things considered, is pretty good odds.

I have short fingers and this thing has all the width of a 2 X 4. Being so fat it messes up my hand placement, trying to get my finger right on the trigger. And then, the magazine is an absolute pain to load. Because this is a Bullseye Pistol target gun, I only have to load five, but I did buy a LULA because fully loading a magazine to 13 plus rounds was too painful without the device.

I don't carry the thing on a belt, but it sure would be bulky and with four double stack magazines fully loaded, my pants would probably fall down if I did not use suspenders.

This carries nine rounds in its single stack magazine, and it is very compact, all things considered.

You need more rounds?, planning to do a reenactment of the invasion of Russia but this time with a double stack 9mm?
 
Cuz this is America, Land of the Free. We can choose what we want to carry (sadly, not all of us..). Since double stacks aren't prohibited right now, they aren't in high demand. Change that tomorrow and everyone and their mama will want double stacks. Lol

Doesn't bother me much in the winter for whatever reason.

Never realized until I read on the gun boards how I'm either really clever with placement or lucky with body style in terms of concealing easily.

Agreed. I carry a G23 SOB style and after a day or two I got used to it. With a normal t-shirt it hardly prints at all; certainly not enough for me to worry about it. Personally, I like the fit of double stacks better anyway. I have fairly long digits and I've found most Glocks fit just right.
 
I live in a small town in the forest. We have had 1 murder in 60 years. Last armed robbery was in the 70s. I don't feel the need to go around with a gun holding 15-18 rounds. A J frame in my pocket or my 9mm Shield offers plenty of protection. I
Nothing will increase the price of an item faster than saying it will become unavailable. Nothing makes a person want something more than saying he can't have it

I'm 6'2" and I have a hard time concealing a full-size pistol unless I'm wearing a sweat shirt or something... which doesn't happen much here in Texas. The trade-off is... because I carry a single-stacker 9mm, I have it on me all the time, vs leaving my 1911 (or insert your double-stack 9mm here........... ) on the dresser or in the truck console. The choice of a carry piece is exceptionally individual...

Now, if you are talking a range piece... well, who cares? The Browning HiPower is forever my favorite 9mm, and my favorite double-stack, but there is no way I can conceal it for carry.

I guess this is the same argument as to why I like 20rd AR magazines... following the OP's logic, I would always have a 30-, 40-, or bigger mag in my AR... because I can and they are legal. Make the tool fit the job...

If I can conceal a 5 inch 629 on an OWB holster you being two inches taller than me can conceal a full sized autoloader IWB.
