Hello guys,

Here's another build inspired by the old XM177 pictured bellow.

GCRXM177E2.jpg

This time i when ahead and imagined what a XM177 would look like modernized. it's a work in progress

XM177-P with a 40 rounds PMAG

XM177-P with a 20 round PMAG just like the original used to have.

Some specs:
Aero Precision M4 Carbine lower.
Flat top to accommodate any modern optic
Free float Atlas handguard
11.5 inch barrel (same as the xm177e2)
Aero Precision Nickel Boron Bolt
Radian Raptor Ambi-Charging handle.
SBA4 Brace
BCM furniture

Nope, 20 round Colt. I built an XM177E2 clone after I got out in '88, sold it on the eve of the Clinton Ban for way more than I had into it.

Correct but with a pistol brace and a 11.5" barrel I don't see how it could be over 26" and now that the ATF says to get that measurement it's measured with the brace at it's shortest possible position.

It is, i contacted Aero Precision to confirm my dimension and it check out, 26.5". Its good to go.

Your efforts, while laudable, don't resemble an original XM177 in the least.

One of the characteristics of the XM177 was the "sound moderator" that was used in place of the standard flash hider. The diameter of this sound moderator was too large for the bayonet ring to fit over, and so the bayonet lug was omitted. The sound moderator has been classified as a suppressor by the ATF, and needs a stamp.

My XM177 clone (which is FA, btw) has a long standard flash hider rather than a sound moderator. It also has a bayonet lug, so that I could mount a bayonet. That's the only way it differs from an original.

So... because it has a lug and no pinned moderator it's not even close? Heck I though it was closer than the OP's... Post up a picture of yours for the class.

You are right, it does look closer to a colt commander than mine ever will.

The thing about mine is that im not going for a modern-day look and style rather than a clone.

I like the 11.5" Commando, I thought the moderator on the XM177 to be extrainious.

The 13.5" IDF M16 (A1) really seems like the best allover basic shorty.

How would Aero Precision know what the length is when all you used was their lower? At least as far as I can tell that all from them you used, unless it's a complete pistol you bought from them and then changed handguard, charging handle, etc. to get what you want. I could very well be wrong, but I'd have to measure myself before I slapped a foregrip on it, if it was my pistol.

While verifying for yourself is a good idea, if you'd been paying attention with the rest of the class, you'd know that an AR with an 11.5" barrel and mil-spec carbine receiver extension, is indeed 26" (plus a brunette hair) in overall length

Times like this when 16 inch carbines kits are 279 I truly kick myself for looking at and putting down a faux 177 suppressor that had the screws up near the actual bird cage, the rest just slipped over the barrel.

a bad had one made like that around 81 or so and a nice looking faux 177 his brother ended up with it and had it in his c141 over panama that night and on a MIA remains returnc141 flight to and from from Hanoi....everyone assumed it was issue!

got to say a 177 just does not look right with a 30 rounder or even a curve but 20 in it, yep Colt or Adventure line 20 its got to be...now get some OD green 100 MPH tape to tape on a cleaning rod section on the left side... an M60 or M14E2 sling from the butt to the front sight tower... a ditty hat with a couple of grenade rings in the band maybe a couple of flechettes... a nice set of tiger stripes... a system for making yourself 20 again..... oh well that blew it.

But a carbine receiver extension aka carbine length buffer tube would make that weapon a short barreled rifle, because it would allow attachment of a stock and not a brace. Isnt a pistol buffer tube and a carbine or rifle length buffer tube different?
