This thread is about 1st and 2nd amendment rights and the search of public records for threatening speech.

This thread may get shut down immediately, but hear me out and let's keep politics out of it.

Let me start out by saying I'm in favor of social surveillance. If you're stupid enough to threaten the sheep, then the sheep should take you down. I used to work in cyber forensics and wrote software for just this purpose.

However, just so everyone realizes, we are becoming a 2 strikes and your out society:

1. Make a threat on social media

2. Have in your possession an "assault weapon", High Capacity Magazine", "body armor" ...

3. You're out.

Now there's plenty of evidence where this is a good thing:

Three Mass Shooting Plots in Three States Thwarted By Police:
https://www.iheart.com/content/2019...ing-plots-in-three-states-thwarted-by-police/

But, in the interest of the sheeple, we are definitely giving up some 1st amendment rights.

I see this as a small price to pay to protect our 2A

Just so you know, this surveillance will increase, by a lot:

FBI Seeks Contractor To Harvest Facebook and Twitter Data To Identify Potential Shooters, Terrorists:
https://sfist.com/2019/08/08/fbi-se...ta-to-identify-potential-shooters-terrorists/

While I think we are at increased risk of having our privacy done much harm, I think much of that potential harm comes from companies like Google, Facebook, and maybe some other similar social Internet medias.
I do recognize even the U. S. Government is not harmless.

On the other side of the issue, many people are foolish about posting. "Sexting" is one example that many, primarily young, do, which has a large potential for harm.
In the case of these three would-be mass murderers perhaps I should be happy they posted their intent so those on the receiving end had an opportunity to report them, and thankfully they did report them.

Once it's out on the net, it's like a bullet that's been fired. It can't be called back.

i don't care what happens to cretins who threaten to kill folks on social media. As a minimum i want them reported to NICS and spend some serious time in jail.

Law enforcement has been tracking people who threaten to kill others on social media for some time. The FBI found the El Paso shooters "manifesto" on social media just prior to the shooting. They could not predict where the shooting would take place.

The monitoring is happening. How much power do we want the powers that be to have for going after someone who says something stupid on the internet. We don't have enough jails for them, and one of the contestants already wants to empty the jails by 50% now.

Sorry, but none of my constitutional rights are up for grabs. I can't believe you would say you're willing to give up a little of the 1st to save the 2nd. What about the 4th? Law enforcement can search and seize any of your property they deem dangerous without door cause? How about the 5th? You incriminate yourself and go to jail, or don't speak and go to jail. The 10th? The Federal government makes and enforces every aspect of your life. The founders of our country wrote the Bill of Rights for a reason. They are guaranteed rights, basic human rights. Only the very minimum restriction necessary on any of them should be allowed, and only for very limited circumstances. Bomb scares aren't protected by the 1st amendment, and thermonuclear weapons aren't protected by the 2nd.

People who post threats online deserve what they get. If you threaten my life in person and you’re armed, you’re going to get shot. You’ve made the threat and have the ability to carry out that threat. It’s no different online. Threats have to be taken seriously. I don’t even talk about lethal force through text unless it’s self defense or defense of those I love from the threat of serious physical harm or death. I have reported many people on YouTube for posting things threatening. Threats are no longer harmless.

As for which is more important, I still believe that the 2nd is the most important. The 2nd, allows the 1st, to actually have an impact. The wolf leaves the sheep alone when the sheep can defend themselves.

THIS IS SOCIAL MEDIA. Any software search on keywords and other filters will identify what firearms you've posted owning and shooting. This capability has existed for ANY transmitted communication since before 1970 that I know of.

You have no idea how much information is being collected on you by private industry. Everything you do on the web is being analyzed and sold to some third party. Every phone call you make is being analyzed by a computer which is sending data to a Governmental agency. They want to know your buying habits and your politics, and everything about you. Most of you have devices in your home that are voice activated and are listening in 24 hours a day. And there are companies recording and analyzing what you do, 24 hours a day. Many locations have traffic cameras which record your license plate number and keep records of where you go and when. There are no restrictions to private companies doing this, and they do. Because of your cell phone giving out your locations, it is very easy to find you anyway. You have zero privacy with the private sector, and yet, you are worried about the Government?

If you really want to be scared about surveillance, read about the Chinese surveillance of their population. https://www.nytimes.com/2019/05/06/...na-surveillance-uighurs.html?showTranscript=1 The interesting thing to me, is many like it. They feel safer in a controlled society. If you just keep your head down, do what you are told, don't cause trouble, the Chinese Police will pass you by and put their bullets in the heads of criminals and agitators.

And yet none of the antifas or "celebrities" who call for killing POTUS seem to get arrested; there was no call from Dems for gun control when one of their fans shot at the Republicans playing ball

Dont forget the camera cars that drive around photographing license plates and recording their locations to sell the data to Law Enforcement and Repo companies......

My personal favorite are the so-called "geneology"services. You think they are rolling in dough telling you you're 13% French? Oh no, but big Insurance pays them $$$$$ for your family predisposition to genetic disease! They are already being used by the cops to narrow down familial connections in DNA evidence cases. Even if you've never handed over a sample, if anybody in your family has, they just pointed a big 'ol double-helix finger at you, buddy!

Well Academy Sports, Amazon, and Walmart aren’t going to come knocking on my door to take my rights. They are going to send me emails to sell me things. It’s annoying. But it’s a business model. I can take your information. But if no one does anything with it, the action was pointless. Its the people who use the information against us who are a threat.

But you are 100% correct about the surveillance and for how long. My uncle, a colonel, told me about it when I was a kid in the 80’s.

1st amendment doesn't give you the right to threaten others. Monitoring what others are saying isn't a problem to me
Monitoring what others say is not a problem to you but at what point does it become a problem? Is it OK for the gov. to monitor online activity? What about listening in on your cell phone conversations? Or listening in on landlines? Reading your E-mail? How about a secret GPS tracker on your car or a hidden bug in your car or even in your home? The gov. questioning neighbors or acquaintances about you? At what point does surveillance become unacceptable? Seems like a slippery slope to me. We are long past 1984.

Without a 2nd Amendment you either don't have a 1st Amendment, or you can be physically intimidated from exercising it.

What good is "freedom of expression" if you can't express yourself without fear of a mob of privileged imbeciles in black hoodies and masks dragging you out of your home and beating you to death with bike locks?

Reading this thread caused me to draw a connection between people who post stupid things on Facebook and do stupid things with guns. I'm sure some of the rest of y'all figured this out a long time ago. I don't intend to blame social media for society's ills but it seemed like somebody, a real life person, stepped in before stupid happened. To stear this post back to firearm related, I'm thinking about the term " range therapy" and getting out with friends to shoot and hunt.

We would not be worrying about our 2nd Amendment rights if it were not for Sheepal people that are influenced by Propaganda machines like CNN. Give a organization like CNN free speech and watch a country start to become destroyed. The free speech propaganda to take away another freedom like the 2nd Amendment. The Irony is beyond comprehension. And what is amazing and hypocritical is how free speech from CNN has made the world into a "Politically Correct" country, which means free speech is actually forbidden. And we see the "Politically Correct" kill free speech in every aspect of our lives, jobs, everywhere. And I mean everywhere.

You have the right to remain silent; however, you may not have the control to do so. Anything you say, can be used against you in a court of law.

Pretty simple.

Yes, unless one is independently wealthy they best shut up and put up....unless they don't mind living in a cardboard box.

I think you can be super wealthy, like islands and such in the hundreds of millions, shut up and all but if you make bad choices you have to work on it just to get into a box..,
