Last 3 years we have had 2 pups bitten by copperheads.

Dispatched one with Ruger SR 22.

Friend said get a couple of backyard cats. We did and have not seen any since.

Neighbor up the street had a picture he took in his back yard. A Black snake was swallowing a copperhead whole.

Don’t hurt black snakes.

Friend of mine took this picture of big rattler eating a cottontail right under his blind. You have to look close but you can see the snake's eyes as I took this picture through the glass of a picture frame.

These pictures hang on the bulletin board at camp; don't know details

I took this picture of a snake track wider than my EEE boot; followed it to a brush pile where I decided I was not curious enough to try to determine if it was a black snake or a rattler. No other snakes get that large.

Have seen similar tracks at same location two separate years.:what:

CCI 9mm snakeshot cycles fine through my CZ 75. Has dispatched several copperheads. All that said, we prefer shovels if available.

That would be a King Snake. They will eat venomous snakes.

I use CCI 9mm with the smaller shot, I think #12, in a Kel-Tec PF9. I always have it with me around the place.

t's the smallest, lightest combo the works on all snakes. And then only on venomous that may come in contact with Grandkids.

The 9mm #4 shot I've found to be worthless.

I've never needed to take care of a snake. I used to catch copperheads as a kid. If you're careful, they're fine. Even if they get a little aggressive. A couple of springs ago we stumbled upon a sleepy copperhead while walking around my uncle's property. We spooked it, it spooked us. It couldnt tell if it wanted to run or strike. It would meander a few feet then raise up in a coil. Sorta come at us then flee then raise up. I was in thick pants and tall boots. I just lightly kicked it in the chops hard enough to help it make up its mind to slither away.

Now cottonmouths can be grouchy. They will sometimes charge the boat if we get too close to thier nesting sites. They can't get in the boat, but we sort of just thump them in the head with an oar and they swim off.

I've never met a snake that needed shooting. To each their own though.

I reload both the speer 38/357 and 44 cal shot capsules. both are very good snake killers I use 7.5, 8, or 9 lead shot. work great! as mentioned previously any shotgun is superior but not very handy as a Handgun. I purchased some CCI 40 cal shot loads for my sons Glock 22-40 cal and they work fine! 22 rat shot is inferior to the above mentioned loads.

Yep, but after the way I saw the "guide" smack those cockers, I was ready to shoot him. I do not condone using a hard object to smack a dog, no matter hos misbehaving it is.,

I know a guy who had a 410 single shot pistol. I think it may have been an Encore.

I think that is actually an indigo snake. Both will eat other snakes. Indigos get much larger though.
This guy is probably close to 5' in length and lives under a log outside the mess hall @ camp.

About five years ago we had a run of copperheads worse than now. The biggest one I saw then was a whopper. My dog was barking into his doghouse, and I went out to see what was wrong. When I looked in his house, I saw the grand daddy of all copperheads. He was as big around as my arm. I grabbed a hoe and tried to drag him out, and that’s when he started chasing me. I ran to the house to get my 12 ga, and he escaped. The next day, we found him dead on the road in front of my house. We measured him at 49 inches. I never saw one that big before or since.

I told you you needed a longer hoe! ;) Only ever had two rattlers chase me. One I had shot w/38 rat shot but only made him mad. The other was very strange. I came into camp for lunch, leaving my gunbelt on seat of truck and went into trailer for lunch. After lunch, stepped out of my trailer just in time to see a 4' rattler crawling across the caliche drive about 10' past my truck. He was headed for an old tool shed, but as I sprinted to the truck, the snake turned toward me (or the truck) and kicked in the afterburner. We were about 20' apart and I was surprised that the snake saw, or heard, or felt vibrations of my approach being that far away, but he obviously did. Maybe he was just seeking shelter under my truck??? IDK but I got to the 357 Blackhawk (first two chambers loaded w/shot) before he got to me or the truck. No hoes for this south Texas redneck......they don't make them w/long enough handles!

I've been using .45 ACP snake loads made from .308 brass using .410 shot cups and #9 shot. Dies were a special order from RCBS probably 40 years ago and I've killed probably 40 or 50 Western Diamondbacks in that time. It usually takes one shot and they function any of my 1911s just fine. I think the dies might be standard by now.

I have always had a weakness for Taurus Judge. I dont have one, but I do reload both .410 and. 45colt. Despite having sworn off any more Taurii, I would buy a Judge if I find one at the right price.
I think the Judge or Governor would be a first rate sidearm for snake patrol.
Generally, I have a "live and let live" approach to snakes....unless they're venomous, or up around the house.
