Recently received hogue rubber grips for my ruger security six, but the fit is awful out of the box, with the rear of the grip sticking out beyond the frame and biting into the web of my hand.
The instructions say to place strips of tape to make the grip flush with the frame, but I had to add so much tape that the grip would catch and pull up the tape as I installed it.
Could I add some sort of shim and secure it with super glue, or is there a better option?

Wow, I'm surprised to hear that, as I just put a set onto an N-frame Smith and the fit was darn near perfect. Maybe you can upload some pics do we can see and help provide suggestions.

Contact Hogue.
They'll either tell you how to correct the fit, or they'll send you a new set.
That's what I'd do too.

I know very little about the Ruger revolver line-up and whether there are variances with the Security Six models, but I just have to believe you got the wrong set of grips.

I just looked at mine. Same gun as my avatar but with Hogue Monogrips, Original grips look better but Monogrips fit my hand better and makes it a better shooter for me. There is a recess from the grip to the frame that may be what you are talking about maybe 1/16 inch. To be honest since I put the grips on it I have only shot mid load 38 Special's in it and this fit is not a problem for me. I can see how tape could correct this if needed.

That's what I'd do. The Hogue grips on my own Security Six fit perfect. But a couple of years ago, I ordered a set of Pachmayer grips from Midway for a Smith j-frame, and they didn't fit worth a darn. They were suppose to go around the grip frame and close like a clam shell. They wouldn't, so I contacted Pachmayer, sent the grips back to them, and in a couple of weeks I got a new pair - the same model as I sent back. They are what I've had on my j-frame ever since.
I figure both Hogue and Pachmayer grips are mass produced, and every once in a while a bad pair slips by the inspector(s). It's inconvenient, but I'll bet Hogue will make good on your grips. Like I said, the Hogue grips on my own Security Six fit perfect.:)

I’m thinking you got round butt grips rather than square butt grips by the way you described it.

Sorry for the wait, busy week.

I too had a S6 and installed the same grip. Had the same problem. I didn’t do anything about it. Just thought I’d share my experience.

I put Pachmayrs on my S6 as they cover the back of the grip frame. But Pachmayr warns they will only fit 151- s/n & later guns. So I guess Ruger made some changes....
