Red Flag Law in Florida costs man his guns

Yes, taking away someone's guns may prevent one method of suicide, but it won't prevent suicide per se. Especially now with all the publicity about Epstein, millions of people learned how to kill themselves simply and relatively painlessly with just items found in any home, a doorknob and something to put around their neck. All the reporters have been bleating exactly how to do it and how the person loses consciousness almost immediately and then dies shortly thereafter.

Substitution effect--far too many drugs, cheap alternatives such as plastic bags, razors, etc. exist. Japan makes it almost impossible for folks to have firearms but has a very high suicide rate that last time that I checked. Once again the tool is not the deed as far too many magical thinkers believe. A gun is an inanimate tool, no more no less, and the person acts on it rather than the reverse until at least Googul Nest folks start making smart internet guns.

I wonder how many drug overdoses are actually suicides? Substance use disorders searched out first in many forensic autopsies. I remember old time police tell me about the dubious character of single car wrecks. The Red Flag Laws are to deal with crisis and prevent harm. Hopefully, the person can get some help past his crisis.

I have been in meetings where anti-people claimed that with the confiscation of all firearms suicide would cease.

IMHO, this is just a trojan horse bill... That is, it's an antigun bill disguised as a safety bill. What I do not understand is, if someone is seen as possibly being a danger to themselves or others, what sense does it make to only focus on removing firearms? Can they not still accomplish the same goal in the absence of firearms?

MHO, this is just a trojan horse bill.

The point we have been trying to make is that the Baker law codifies crisis intervention practices already in place. In the instance of potential violence the police are involved. It would be a good thing to investigate crisis intervention plans in your community. The agencies in this community are too focused on interventions without any concern for firearms. Should there be guns, Po-Po takes care of that. Should he get behind help is always on the way.

I believe you missed the point. You quoted and responded to one sentence without taking into account everything that was stated afterwards. If the true goal is to avoid "crisis", how is singling out firearms going to accomplish that goal?

RFL's: Nary a month passes here that the SWAT team has to deal with a domestic abuse/hostage situation in involving a firearm. The focus is on the gun if it is used as potential weapon. The hunting for guns primarily is not where it's at. Investigate the crisis intervention in your community. To me, this gun hunt business if just not a problem. MI is not a matter of innocence or guilt. Talk to your local police on doing interventions. I did one call where a woman was screaming in the back ground. The family member on the phone had panicked. I called for the crisis intervention team go to the house. The woman was suffering from a serious untreated thyroid disease. No storm troopers looking for guns etc. In this case the woman was physically ill. She was not mentally ill. Point being there was no hunt for a gun. Should there be a threat of a gun the police would intervene. This gun grab business, in my experience, does not happen. See what your community does. I double dare you!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the entire purpose of the Red Flag laws to grab guns?

the same people that complain about you on social media to get you banned are the same people that will complain to the government [that you elected] to get your guns taken away. Minority Report, based on conjecture and hearsay you lose your rights.

While unfortunate this sort of thing does happen, always has and always will. Lots of people out there with the same names and mistaken identity happens. I'm not opposed to the concept but there should be better ways to ensure they have the right person and make it easier to resolve when mistakes happen.

No! The purpose of Extreme Orders of Protection is to protect folks from themselves (suicide) and protect others: Think wife beaters.

Many states already have provisions to confiscate firearms from wife/girlfriend beaters and stalkers. Oklahoma is one of those states. The judge checks the block and the perps guns are gone.

no beating or stalking or even sustained threats needs to occur. simply an accusation of such usually strips you of your rights that you will have to fight with expensive court hearings to get back.

I was headed out to the weekly Geezers Bullseye match and caught the tail end of an interview on NPR. Did not catch the location in Florida. The interviews had to do with people in Florida who were involved with the Red Flag laws. Heard a description of how the hearing went on fire arms removal for a year. The sheriff involved spoke highly of the value to his department and the community. A lawyer was interviewed who was challenging the law for unconstitutional vagueness. Very informative. Catch the interview if you can.

Celebrities threatening to move out of the country isn't much of a threat. Esp a terrorist threat.
I was thinking more of the ones like expressing the hope Barron Trump gets assaulted by a child molester, or considering burning down the White House. Wish those folks wouldn't keep just getting a slap on the hand, if they weren't "celebrities" they'd have a lot bigger consequences.

As for moving out of the country, I'm sure everyone here would be very happy to help them pack.

Back from the Geezer's Match. It was a good shoot. Since we are projecting let's do a story. You hear a commotion outside your house. You see a stranger buck naked save a flak vest and AR. He is going up and down your block. Screaming loudly but it makes no sense. He starts firing into the air. You are Duddly Do-Right for the day. What would you do?
