Been looking in local pawns and gunsshopsfor last few months, and what they have are overpriced and generally needs rebuilt. Total trash with pitting, busted stocks, gouged bores and so on. The new rifles always are marked a few hundred over what I see online for same new model. And most shops here act like letting you look at the new ones is a waste of their time. So I haven't had a chance to handle and compare the new ones locally. I am frustrated last week I had $1,000 in my pocket and was brushed off without being able to look at more than 2 rifles to compare. One was a used Remington 700($680) that had gashes in bore the other a new savage axis ($790). The axis was to slippery and way to short .

So in the $1000 or less ballpark what's your guys' favorite? This area has elk, deer, black bear, javelina hunts all of which I plan to do. I am looking for a solid trouble free build not prone to jams and pretty accurate from the factory. Most of my experience on centerfire rifles have been 30-06 or 30-30. I want a .308 now unless a good deal in .270 or 30-06 comes up.

My personal favorite for current manufactured rifles is the Ruger American. I think they are a better choice compared to current Rem 700's. I dumped 308 as a hunting round and replaced it with 6.5 CM. As far as competitive prices and selection, Walmart is worth looking at if buying new. Their prices are hard to beat for what they carry.

Yeah. That axis should be around 300 at most. I am in New Mexico. All the other areas of the state I have lived have been reasonable and friendly. My old hometown I'd go into the shop there for just a box of ammo or gun sock and walk out with a shotgun or something. This spot isn't like that. I get beyond frustrated walking in with cash with every plan to buy before I leave to experience that bs.

I have had good luck with Ruger and Savage rimfires. Right now sako, tikka, Remington, Winchester, weatherby, browning I am open to. Looking for a all around reliable rifle that's not fussy and accurate enough out of the box. New or used up yo about a thousand is my cash I have set aside. If I get one cheap enough to pick up a glock at the same time it's icing on the cake.

So I will be purchasing right unseen online or driving a few hours hoping another county has something in stock.

My Tikka T3 lite stainless in 308 Win has been reliably accurate for the past 12 or 15 years. Purchased at Walmart a long time ago for $440. I also hear good things about Bergara rifles. Both can be had for less than $1000, although you also need to factor in good glass.

I read that Bergara is based on old Remington 700. How is the stocks on that and the Tikka? I know there's good synthetic ones with a lot that's trash that needs switched fast like in that axis I handled.

Skeeter, I know. The shops that sell guns less than than a 2 hour round trip from here are bad. That's why I am asking here so I can make a better decision and just order online and have one shipped to a ffl. I refuse to pay almost double for new over msr price here and the used here are all overpriced and look unsafe without a complete overhaul for most part.

I'm very happy with my Savage 10 FCP. I caught it on a really nice deal for $379, stock was crap as most OEM ones are but it's pretty sweet after replacing it with a Choate Tactical stock. Savages have a reputation for being accurate beyond their pay grade.

That being said, if your budget is $1000, you can buy alot more rifle. What barrel length are you looking for if the Axis was too short?

I purchased a little over a week ago a Rem 700 ADL from Cabela's on sale for $450 ($499 normally) and got a $75 Remington rebate. I've put it into a KRG Bravo stock for $300'ish (you'd probably want something different for a hunting rig) and added a Trigger Tech Trigger plus a TPS rail and rings all for under $1,000. Although mine was in 6.5CM, the rifle was also available in .22-250 and .308. Have about 25 rounds through it so far (trying to break it in properly), and it's a shooter!

Places like Euro Optic sells .308 Rem 700P barreled actions with 24" 5R rifled barrels for under $600 that you could put in the stock of your choice and be good to go. Lots of options for under $1K.

It wasn't the barrel that was too short on the axis but the stock. One that short would need replaced immediately and on a new gun that seems ridiculous. I've replaced stocks before on used guns if the price was right.

Is Reminngton quality worth it anymore? I grew up shooting those and Winchester rifles but I heard iffy things on ac and corrosion on the new offerings from Remington. I know the 700 used one I saw locally was bad. I really like my dad's that is older than I am. I like the Winchester 70s also.

Browning bolts good anymore? I remember a blr I bought in 95 that had the ejector malfunction after a few boxes were shot through it during a squirrel hunt.

Holy crap that place is overpriced! For a grand your prospects are pretty open. How classy do you want to go? For accuracy, pretty darn hard to beat a Tikka. https://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/mobile/search.php?q=Tikka+308&type=

For wood, I’d look for a used or new CZ 550. https://www.gunbroker.com/item/829372725 Honestly, there’s so many rifles out there that you could have for way under a grand. Just look around. I’m sorry. I can’t get over this. $800 for an Axis!? That’s not capitalism. That’s lunacy.

You do know that if you purchase a firearm off the internet, you can refuse it at the FFL if it’s not what the seller described. Right? But I’ve never had to refuse one.

I think that place preys on the idiots. But the 2 pawns in town are equally as bad a is the 1 other gun shop. The other one is polite but refuses to do ffl transfers.

I prefer wood stocks since I can easily modify them to me fast. I am short at just over 5 foot. So most of my stocks I modify myself. That's why that axis shocked me on fit. Length of pull was too short and off balance for me.

I am mainly focused on reliability and accuracy. Ones where extractors don't have history of breaking or gun jams.

Thanks for tikka link. At lunch time today I will look closer at it. At a glance looks like type I have been looking for.

You're much better off buying online if your local prices are that high.
I bought a VTR for less than the price of your lgs axis.
Don't waste your time on a new package rifle. The scope is trash.
Save back a little cash to pick up a Nikon Prostaff or Vortex.

Yeah I think it will be online. My favorite gun shop in next town over closed due to retirement last year. This town has no good alternatives. For this amount of trouble I think I will buy nicer than I used too. I always tried cheap and used in past. This one as nice as 308 I want to keep.
Are the Weatherby or Browning rifles any good in 308? I may just try for a model 70, sako, or tikka. Although bergara is an option. Any trouble with any of these on quality control recently?

Thanks. Any current model 70s better than others on reliability? I ask since I new theres the standard, alaska, the featherweight, and super grade.

Dude don’t buy local, or talk them down. Caliber, if you aren’t shooting 400yd plus a 308 is fine and I’d argue a scope and practice is more important for the 300-600yd range anyway

I understand the desire to support local shops, but some of these folks price themselves out of the market, if they won’t play ball, have them do the ffl paperwork and find a gun at your price . It’s sad when you can buy local

I’d try this in a caliber you want https://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/mobile/product/57891/bergara+b14l501+3006+ridge+syn

Yeah I talked to a retired pawn shop owner today that agreed to act as ffl for me when he isnt out fishing. Since he didn't have a oing out of business sale he is willing to take his old 308 rifles and S&W revolvers in 44 mag and 45 down to his daughter's place of work tomorrow before lunch for me to look at. Sounds like that might be a bargain troves since he has more than a handful of 308 model 70s. I am glad I contacted him today even though the shops been closed for awhile. He just likes me since I was always nice to him and his wife when I needed a knife, pliers, tackle box, squirrel gun. He remembers that since most people here are not that friendly.

If his old shop stock isn't what I want he will act as ffl for a gun brroker or buds sale for me.

I've owned recent rifles from every maker mentioned in this thread except Winchester, and Kimber, tho no necessarily the exact models listed.

The Ruger Hawkeyes are nice rifles for the cost, and when found in the sub 500 dollar range are very much "Best buy's" imo
Personally I think the Americans are the best bang for the buck.

If you like remjngtons, don't buy sight unseen, or go buy a Bergara.

If you want some extra refinement and a few neat features like the quad scope base screws, the Browning Xbolts are very nice rifles, and not bad deals for what you get you will pay more for them tho.
I haven't used a new Ab3 yet, but handling they feel good.

Tikkas are fantastically accurate, have nicer stocks than Americans, and are generally very well thought of. At the 650+ the t3xs bring now, I prefer other makes models, but they are still a good choice.

Savages are also good options, tho I generally don't use them much anymore. If your first expectations are accuracy they deserve a hard look.

Honestly It's difficult to buy a BAD rifle, but you need to decide how much refinement you want.

That Axis you played with will be reliable, accurate and cheap (should have been 350 or less. The more you spend generally the "nicer" the guns get. In the 600+ dollar range most will have decent to good stocks, and triggers, and have fairly smooth actions.
The next factory rifle I want to try is a Winchester 70.
