OMG! WalMart to stop selling all handgun ammo!

Definitely send Walmart a note about their foolish decision. The only thing to get these Corporations to understand is their bottom line. If you cannot stop going to Walmart, then cut back on the number of visits. Get some of you groceries from another store. Get your gas from another gas station. I’m personally changing my grocery shopping to another store. I will no longer browse their goods while waiting on an oil change. I will have any prescriptions moved to rite aide or CVS. I don’t buy much ammo from Walmart but I do spend a lot there on other things and this will stop. We are the only ones who can make a change.

I would, but they might fire me.

Corporations which choose sides in political issues are led by fools, as by doing so they immediately alienate a large percentage of their prospective customer base. I do shop at Walmart often enough, although I've only bought ammo there twice that I can remember. Them pushing for additional gun control means I'll spend my dollars elsewhere, as I will not finance their efforts to do so. I e-mailed them letting them know they've lost me as a customer and why.

Sad to see but no skin off my nose. I haven't bought a single round at Wally World since Obamascare II even after ammo became available again. It's inevitably a giant PITA to find a manager and get them to open the damn lockbox and it's not worth the $.09 I save. Just like everything else i try to buy there. It's not worth the hassle or the lack of assistance.

I'm sure other locales operate more efficiently.

Walmart is a business, they can and should do as they please. They are probably correct in that the revenue generated by 5.56 and pistol ammo sales is less than the $ lost because people that don’t like guns won’t shop there.

Guns and ammo are really low margin. Im surprised they carried it as long as they did given the training and liability involved with staff.

If they sale 20% of the nation’s ammo as they claim, then ammo sales is big. What is even bigger and likely to bite them, is all the other items we buy from them once we leave the sporting goods isle.

Ammo, soft drinks, test strips and their garlic stuffed olives are things that get me in Walmart's door. Once I'm in the store WM has a chance to sell me other things. Their competitor in my area is in the same shopping plaza. I can do the bulk of my shopping there. They even have a limited selection of ammo. (Meijers). I see WM losing dollars on this.

Real bummer for me as WM was my go to for 9mm.

Hopefully I can stock up some before it's all gone as I expect ammo prices will go up everywhere because of this.

Won’t affect me one bit. Haven't been in a Super Walmart in years. What I don’t reload I buy at Sportsmans or a legit local gun shop in small towns out west where I live. Some enterprising individuals will fill the gap left pretty quickly.

I haven't been in a Walmart since the mid 90s. Regarding ammo purchases - I learned in the Obama years to find a bunch of sources for ammo and reloading supplies.

Just picked up 200 rounds of Federal 115gr brass for 17 cents a round, 100 jhp for 29 cents a round. No LGS is close to that.

Since I don't buy ammo at Walmart or have any plans to buy ammo from anywhere (I load it all myself), I'm tempted not to care. Really, Walmart might be better off stopping sales of everything gun-related and just dedicating that store space and those employees (which at this point is usually only a half-dedicated person on daytime shifts) to selling other merchandise. It's a real pity they made the decision at the behest of criminal, homicidal sociopaths instead of in the interest of their shareholders. Sounds like a bunch of losers are running Walmart.

I would think that people that don't reload would buy in bulk online rather than buying 9mm with their frozen peas, laundry detergent and their kid's tube socks. If Barlett's claims are true that Walmart sells 20% of the ammo in the US, then it is troubling that they'll stop selling. I would think that would be a substantial loss of revenue for them that they're screwing shareholders out of just to fail to appease the activists they think they're conceding to that won't be satisfied until they halt all gun and ammo sales, even to the Fudds.

There's no reason to think it will change the demand for ammo at all. I doubt it will change the price much either since there are numerous alternative suppliers, many of whom have had lower prices. Walmart typically brings prices down because they can buy products for less than competitors because they buy more of it. But their ammo prices have long been substantially higher than competitors. That suggests to me they have for some time now not been buying much.

Because Walmart was a poor source of ammo for a long time, it really shouldn't trouble the consumer any more than record stores or video rental places going out of business.

I bought at Walmart for small quantities when I wasn't able to reload for some reason. I mostly bought Winchester White Box. I got my 147gr. 9x19mm JHPs there.

I just cleaned out my reloading/server room so I could get to my presses. No more store bought practice ammunition for me. I'll buy my carry ammunition at gun shows.

walmarts Chinese junk prices are going to go up with trumps traffis on china as they pass the increases on to their customers, another reason to skip Walmart. if you must have Chinese junk you will still have harbor freight.

I personally don't blame Wal-Mart. They are a business who is trying to appease two competing demographics. They just hadvan idiot commit a mass shooting 9f their customers in their store, and shortly there after, with the support of many in the gun community, had another idiot open carry an AR into their store which shut down the store, scared customers/employees, and cost the business money.... I'm not mad at Wal-Mart, I'm mad at the idiots who are going to Wal-Mart with firearms to settle their political differences...

You don't get to be a multi-billion dollar company by making rash decisions. Whatever political varnish you want to put on this, it's going to be factored in to dollars and cents at the end of the day. Love them or hate them, some corporate egghead has already run the numbers.

Here's a couple of ideas off the top of my non-egg head:

Walmart is selling ammo below cost once you factor in insurance. They have done some algorithm that determines ammo shoppers between the ages of 34 and 61 are more likely to buy more tube socks with a 37% profit margin if 9mm is offered .07 under cost. However, that only holds true if Barbie Dolls are a guaranteed profit maker of 12% over cost, but due to the trade war Barbies are expected to increase in price by 3% making tube socks less viable and meaning that 9mm sold under cost is no longer a winning strategy....or something goofy like that that is way over my head.

Maybe Walmart sees the writing on the wall. If gun manufacturers can be sued after a shooting, then it won't be long that places that supply the ammo is sued as well. 20% of all ammo sold in the US is a very tempting class action waiting to happen, right? Get out in front of it before it gets hauled into the courts.

Maybe Walmart really DOES think that it is part of the problem when it comes to shootings. Maybe it really DOES want to try and do something about it, right or wrong. It also knows that some of you banging your fist on the table able them not selling handgun ammo and screaming boycott will be in there buying those 3% more expensive Barbie Dolls in November because even if they don't stock ammo and it bothers you, they are still going to have the best prices in town.

This isn't a blunder on their part. The populous is too dependent on cheap crap to care for long, to be honest.

Lots of online shops are though... plus no tax. And no gas to drive to buy it. And you don't have to go to WalMart and lower your opinion of humanity

Our local Walmart and Academy were the only stores that didn't charge outrageous prices during the obama debacle. The day Walmart pulls handgun ammo off their shelves is the day I've spent my last dollar in any of their stores!!!

I haven't bought ammo at WM nor any other shooting supplies or sporting goods in a long time. Their selection is pretty dismal. I reload all my ammo except .22lr and I buy that online. I used to live about 2 miles from Midsouth Shooters Supply and they got all my reloading and .22lr purchases. Now I live about 600 miles away but I still purchase from them online. In 35 years I've bought 2 guns from WM, the rest I bought from a LGS that treated me with respect and rewarded my business with some nice discounts now and then.
Does their ban on handgun ammo include .22lr? All we have been purchasing at WM has been household cleaning supplies and groceries. I'm going to talk to the wife and see if we can't cut that back and purchase elsewhere. WM can disappear tomorrow and I wouldn't miss it a bit.

Yeah I personally don’t care.

My LGS has ammo at mediocre prices if I just want a box or two, but generally I just buy it by the case online.

Being a multi-billion dollar company is not a guarantee that you'll continue to be that in the future. Sears, Montgomery Ward and K-Mart are three examples of huge retail corporations that are either gone or on their way out. I'm not angry with them. I just think their foolish and as I stated will not finance their push for gun control by shopping there in the future.

Sent a message to corporate. I'm getting pretty good at writing these things...Sears, K-Mart, Dicks, Cabelas/Bass Pro, now Walmart.
