Trying to decide on which 308

All guns I have bought new were cheap 22s. All accurate rather from savage,Ruger, Marlin. Only issue I ever had was a Browning blr. And that may have been due to me leaving it in my dad's gun safe and him loaning it out to idiots that new even touched a gun as pretty as that Browning looked.
Rest of my buys have been on the used gun rack, since I had kids and the money was spent on kids needs first. Now the kids are out on their own.

So a better quality gun that I can get than those ones I would buy for a hundred and less and fix up before using sounds terrific for me right now. Used I am fine with but I want a nicer one condition wise than I used to make due with. Thanks for letting me on being careful of sight unseen Remington nowadays.

Good luck with your search. Bud's Gun Shop is a fine place to buy a new rifle as they offer excellent prices and service. The new Remington's are of good quality (despite what you might read on message boards, everything you read on the internet is not necessarily true). The new FN Winchester M70 is also a very good rifle, as is the Ruger M77. The Remington and the Ruger are made in the USA if that is important to you.

Your local gun store sounds exactly like my local gun stores... used guns marked at new gun prices and new guns marked higher than retail.

I stopped going to the local gun stores to even look at their prices and just go to the local Sportsmans warehouse, Coastal, Cabellas and even Walmart. If Iam paitient I can usually find what I want on sale at one of these chains eventually for what the big mail order places charge... but I save the shipping and transfer fees and hassles of the mail order places.

I like to shop Armslist.com for local private sales. I seldom save any money by buying private party... but I do generally get a WHOLE lot more gun for my money!!! The LGS wants $50 to do a private party transfer... I found a local club that will do transfers for $10 for members and $20 for non members. The local gun shops are dead to me!

I have a pair of old Remmington 700 target rifles in .308 and .223 with the questionable triggers. I would reccomend looking at other brands.

Armslist I haven't thought of. And Walmart here only has muzzleloaders. Closest big chain store is 3 hours away. I plan on that drive when theres a gun show in that town to give me better odds of finding something.

In the $1k range on hunting rifles, I like Browning X-Bolts, Kimbers, M70s and Tikkas, probably pretty much in that order, although the Kimbers are a bit of a specialty rifle being so light. I've had multiples of most of those, but only have the X-Bolt and Kimber left as my main hunting rifles. If you like wood stocks, the M70 featherweights are very nice rifles, and they also come in a compact version with a shorter LOP. It's hard to go wrong with a Tikka, although I do think their stock design transmits more felt recoil to the shooter than some other rifles, shouldn't be a big issue with the .308.

A Bolt and x bolt I do like the looks of from Browning. Tikka seems good with a sako barrel at the price point. How much faster does the featherweight m 70s heat up than the standard offerings. I do live less than half a mile from a gun range, and between hunts plinking is fun.

Bought one today. That old retired out of business guy I know had a 308 I like. It's a 1963 model 70 Winchester with a custom wood thumbhole stock. That stock fits me as if it was customized for my measurements. Gun is maybe 80% original finish with an old scope mounted to it. Bore is clean but has a couple of scratches. Action is as tight as can be and as smooth as glass. I know for a fact I wouldn't be able to afford a stock that nice that fits me as well. I figure if I get it to range and dislike the grouping I can replace whatever and keep that stock which is worth more to me than any stock I have ever shouldered.

Glad you found one you like. I am a big fan of Tikka's.

Tikka is definitely on my radar to look for. Only one I have seen for sale in this county is over a grand though. And I found the Winchester before I had to order online and have shipped out to me.
I was tempted today by a m77 ruger and 700 Remington that guy had in his safe for less, but that custom stock had me.

Yeah if priced fairly I would've gotten that axis. But to get it proced right I'd have to order pay shipping charges in addition to ffl fees, plus added hassle. So I took it off my radar. I ruled out new ruger Americans for same reason. I am sure both are good shooters but extra work and wait time plus added costs on a gun that should be so cheap and simple to get ruled them out.

As much I liked my grandpa's Remington 700 that and the bergara is on my want list. I always liked savage and browning both.

When I arrived home with the new gun, my wife looked it over and now she wants a 308 also. So one of the ones on that list I am sur will make it here in a 308 caliber this year. I like that she tries to get matching calibers to what I have. Makes it simple if we take them to woods and lake so we don't accidentally load wrong ammo in a hurry in in poor light. Doubles gun owner cost however.

congrats on finding a nice rifle!
rings in the bore offten don't make a huge difference in field accuracy, unless they are right at the muzzle.

I've had a number of 1-1.5moa rifles with rust spots and dings in the tube.

Yeah I figure if someone could afford to put that expensive of stock on it, there would've switched that out if accuracy was affected. The feel of inner thumhole curve feels more like a target one whe visually it looks standard. Except for high level of polish and quality if the 2 woods used in various spots. Honestly is gorgeous and shoulders and points better than anything else I have ever held.
