Can't wait , bought a new Smith 686 in 86, 4 inch variety. In the late 90's I traded this in towards a Ruger Red Label. Have always missed the Smith. Went into a shop for an $8.00 can of Balistol, walked out with a can of Balistol and a 586-3 4 inch model (still have to wait 10 days).

The 586 looks pristine despite a moron who never cleaned the gun. Like new minus 100 rounds or less. The shop owner thought the action was worked, just feels like a butter factory version to me.

Nice! I inherited a 586 no dash some years ago. Same thing as you, maybe a box of ammo through it or less. The one thing I did do was take off the side plate to clean and oil the inner mechanism.

Being in storage for 30 years not being oiled left light surface rust on a few of the in the white steel pieces

Congrats on the new pistol! What unGodly place do you live in that you have to wait 10 days to take receipt of a legal firearm?

Triple post.

I'm good with both guns, the 4 inch models are very hard to find here on the secondhand market. Your 686 is a beautiful tool.

I always regret not picking up the S&W Bowie knife and the Folding Hunter at the same time as I got the Survival knife. Both were as well designed and constructed as the Survival knife. Blackie Collins and S&W did a fantastic job of making knives together!

gorgeous! let us know how it shoots.

Thanks Muf, hopefully will get to hit the range on Sat. The action is sweet, better than the 686 I had twenty years ago. When I cleaned up the gun. It looks like it had a few rounds fired through it and then put away dirty. Zero carbon build up anywhere and not a single scratch or "handling mark. If it shoots as good as it looks I will be thrilled.

Range report, went to the local indoor range that we frequent, still hot out here. The gun was as expected, fun and more accurate than I. My shooting buddy was so impressed that he tried more than once to buy it from me today.
My first six were some stout home loads. Funny how the whole range goes quite. To everyone's relief I switched it up with some DEWC that we punch paper with. Had to play with the sights a bit. Had some nice groups at ten and fifteen, for me. Overall very happy, now I will help my buddy find one of his own. Think I already found a local in a no dash 6 inch version from a local friend who is a gunsmith.
