Does the installation of Lyman 57 peep sights get in the way of the stripper clip inlet. I have an old 1932 FN 98 action that I would like to chamber in .308 Win. and I don't have the money right now to afford the Lyman 57 sights so I can't really see for myself. If it does, are there any peep sights for the Mauser 98 that doesn't get in the way?

I don't have any stripper clips, but I do have a M98 with a Lyman peep at home I'll double check when I get a chance to pull it out of the safe if no one else knows.

Mine's a 30-06 in a Fajen stock I picked up for a ridiculous price.

Edited to add: just looked up the price of the sights, considering I only paid $150 for the rifle and $5 for the transfer, I practically got the rifle for free last year.

Thank you, sir. $150 is a pretty good price for a mauser. I just got an action, pretty much everything but the stock and barrel, it costed me about $300.00. I'll probably not buy anything from that store again.

Depending on the particular action/condition, that might not be an awful price.

Mine's not in the greatest shape, has a "Marlin" stamped barrel of all things and was sold as "caliber unknown" to top it off. I figured it was worth a roll of the dice.

So I pulled the old girl outta the safe, and I was wrong. Mine's wearing a Willam's peep.

Good news is it gives a clear shot to the stripper clip guide.

I'd suggest calling up Lyman, I'm sure someone there can help you out.

Could you post a photo of the receiver bridge of your rifle please? What I would like to see is whether your rifle has a commercial or military profile on its receiver bridge. Also, is the Lyman 57 SME you've in mind current production or old stock? They've changed the design a bit over the decades.

I have in mind current production. It's the Military profile on the receiver bridge. Sorry it took a little while to respond, I've been busy.

My observation is that the Lyman #57SME, whether pre-1974 or current production, will not fit the military profile 98 bridge. It used to be en vogue or something to mill the clip guide off. The SME was to fit three different receivers with two of those being remodeled. Lyman and Redfield both used to also make sights that would fit the military receivers without the extra milling.

my springfield o3 custom rifle has a Redfield receiver sight and doesn,t interfere with loading with a stripper clip.

I think Mustanger98 has covered the sight sitrep. If you want to stick with the Lyman or some of the older receiver sights you'll need to have the receiver bridge reprofiled first to make room.

The base on the Williams FP sight sits lower on the receiver and will usually fit a military Mauser 98 without modification (other than D/T the two mounting holes, of course.) Some stock alteration may be necessary with the FP, but not always.

The Williams FP also sits back far enough to permit the use of stripper clips.

I have an FN 24/30. I am considering buying a correct lyman 57 receiver sight. The rifle is original configuration. Will the front sight need to be changed? I hope it can be done w/ no change to front sight.
