Pick a caliber...

You can always shell out a Lil extra for the brass...... my 50 cases have lasted long enough to have been justified ;)
Ya if I had the money lol I did see my lgs had 5 boxes of old 8remmag probably for cheap.

I have always wanted to do a 7mm Dakota or the 7mm Canadian magnum, both made to fit perfect in the long action. Plus I am waiting to see witch way they go if there is ever a 7mm prc.

Cabelas has factory fresh ammo these days. At least the one in Hamburg, PA does.

Btw, OP. If Loonwulf, Troy, & I agree something is awesome, it's probably a solid choice.
I wish I had a Cabela's nearby, if so I'd probably buy that gun back......
honestly It's available here, but at 80 bucks a box it killed my enthusiasm. Course now that I don't own one it's on sale for 35.

Rebarrel the 270 rem700 in your caliber of choice, but put a darn good barrel on it

I agree with that... well mostly. It begs the question that, at 5000 rounds, is the barrel on a .270 really shot out? I've no way of knowing exactly but I'll bet the .270 on my wall is getting close to that and isn't close to being worn out. Is the op's that far gone? I suppose so or he wouldn't be asking.

Really? The accuracy life most often cited for .308s is ~5,000 rds, for 6.5 Creed/.260 closer to ~2,500. The .270 is pushing 50% more powder, at higher pressure, through a bore that's not much bigger, I would expect 1,800-2,000 rds tops before you reach similar levels of accuracy and velocity drop off. Maybe other folks aren't loading their .270s the same way, but I was pushing 60gr - 62gr of powder though mine at full pressure, that's not a recipe for long barrel life.

Use case certainly plays a role, if someone is popping deer at shortish range and is only looking for 1.5 - 2 moa consistency, they could certainly push things further. Either way I think it's safe to say he more than got his money's worth out of that barrel.

I’m surprised no one brought up 7.62x54R. Plenty of sporter Mosins out there for cheap if you look; price is about the same as any other rifle round, and it is one of the oldest used military cartridges for a reason.

I am stuck between another .270 Win. and a .30-06. I have both. 7mm STW looks quite nice, I will admit that. I have not shot one yet. I know only one guy who owns one at the range. He got old and wants to sell it now. Not so convinced about the 6.5 Creedmoor and the .243 Win. for elk. I am certain they are sufficient within their limits, but I think the .30-06 pushing a good 180 gr. bullet is a sure choice. The critter doesn't always stand broadside without moving within 200 yards. Most of the time, I am pretty sure either would be very sufficient.

While there aren't too many problems that a man can't fix
with seven hundred dollars and a thirty-ought-six,

I'll see your seven hundred and you won't need more
if the cartridge in your rifle's a six-five creedmoor.

(With apologies to Lindy Cooper Wisdom ... and I don't own either)

I know that I have already pushed for a 30-06, but one round that has gotten my attention lately is 6.5-284. There are several rifles out there now including a cheap buy on a Savage model 11. I might have to sneak one into the safe when my wife is at work.

The upcoming “election run” on ammo may be another reason to look hard at the 30‘06, as there is never a panic buy on 30-06. You know why?

Because guys who shoot ‘06’s don’t panic! (Stolen from another guy on another board...but it’s a cool tag line!)

6.5 Creedmore is a barrel burner, 260 REM may be dying but is alive and well by the people who have been using it since it came out.

I live in the Rockies and was looking for the same type of rifle as you are. I ended up with a Sako 30-06 with a fast 24.5” barrel and load 180g AccuBonds at 2875fps. If I wasn’t chasing elk I would have stepped down to a lighter caliber.

A .280 or .280AI with good bullets would be just as good. A .308 would be great as well and I thought hard about that as well but decided I wanted to fling bullets a bit heavier at good velocity.

Do you honestly think that’s a legitimate argument? Certainly not defensible with the 100 FPS difference between the two. If 3,000 burns barrels then 2,900 does as well and where will you be looking for your replacement 260 tube? No, come back with facts if attack is your game, otherwise stick to suggestions only.
