OK--went to local Walmart to purchase ammo since new law went into effect--also to take advantage of them closing out handgun and 5.56 ammo. They informed me that the back round check will cost me $1--ok--hand the cashier my 'real' CA id driver's license and he told me that he also needed my car registration--I told him that I thought that was what the 'real' id was for, he said that state requires two forms of id. I told him that nobody carriers their car registration--but those are the rules. After going back to car and back inside store the cashier enters each caliber and number of rounds of each. At the end, sheets printed out for each caliber and number of rounds that both he and I have to sign. I bet it took 20 minutes. Don't you feel safer.

That made me want to pull my hair out just reading it!

Reality check... folks generally get the government... they deserve. If the majority of the folks in your state put idiots in charge you either move or learn to deal with it....

Wish it weren't so. I have a few relatives by marriage who love the state -and would never approve this sort of stuff. California is a cautionary tale for rest of the the country. I live in Florida and usually whatever trends occur in California will start to show up here about twenty years later. You can bet that I'll be writing and speaking up against these kind of anti 2nd Amendment propositions here long before they might possibly gain traction...

I find it curious the state law requires federal compliant Real ID and not the state issued CDL. I mean, it's to satisfy a state ammo law.

California is coming to you. And it's not as simple as who Ca. votes into office. Our Federal elections have put politicrooks into office from both parties who are week on illegal immigration. We have conservatively 10 million illegals in Ca. Because of the motor/voter laws many vote. I have been warning family members in Tx. for over 20 years. Texas will be lost in the next 10-15 years if nothing is done

No, the car registration is not part of the rules for buying ammo.

It is 1 of the acceptable extra docs required for a pistol purchase though.

My BIL bought some at walmart and they didn't ask for that either.

I haven't let bought ammo since the new laws

Actually Californias current situation is largely a result of federal policies.
California passed prop 187, the federal government didnt overturn part of it, or make adjustments, they nullified what the state residents passed to stop the state from being taken over shortly before the demographics had shifted so far that they would never be able to do it again.

All while the federal government failed to properly enforce immigration restrictions, or secure the border, which at the time primarily impacted California.
So California tried to remove the incentives to illegal immigration since they could not physically stop it as that was the jurisdiction of the federal government, and was shot down by the federal government, even when passed by almost every county in the state except some parts of the San Francisco Bay Area.

Ronald Reagan as federal President of the United States had previously granted amnesty and turned illegals mostly residing in California into legal citizens and voters in the state. Giving the vote to millions of new people that would primarly vote along racial lines to never enforce immigration that almost kept them from going where they wanted. Yet even after those millions of new voters it would be some time after prop 187 years later that the demographics had given the invasion and their children the vote.
Once again something from the federal level forced California to change rapidly into an entirely different population.

So the Federal government actually forced California to be taken over against the will and wishes of the prior citizens. Once those immigrants and their children, and they have a lot of children as the fastest growing demographic in the nation, became the primary citizen of the state, the entire thing shifted and now the state trips over itself to be a sanctuary state.

Additionaly currently we have more foreign born in the United States than any time in almost a century, but they are not evenly distrubted and California has the largest share:

This includes a lot of legal immigrants, once again with California having a disproportional amount of them employed by the various tech companies and others importing the least expensive source of skilled labor. A lot of Indians and Chinese. It is quite a visible change in just a decade, with muslim head dresses and similar things in public rare just a decade ago now common place as well. This is not to say any of these groups are bad, but that the demographics and population had shifted to something quite different in a very short span as a result of the federal government, eventually it had shifted so much that the new state population outnumbered the prior state population enough to outvote them.

So California has the government the Federal Government forced it to have. More than half of the state is foreign born or the children of foreign born, and it all happened in just a few decades, and against the will of most of the previous citizens.
They now outnumber the previous citizens, and so the State was essentially forced to accept invasion by the Federal Government and be outvoted by the invaders.
Left leaning politicians take this new and overwhelming vote and run with it, doing all they had previously wanted to do.

Bought some more .22 LR ammo yesterday. Took about 3 minutes along with the extra cost of $1.00. My store has had lots of practice since the change in the law on July 1st. They asked if I had bought ammo since the change. I said yes so they got right to it. I asked if there was a difference if it was my first time. They said they would have taken the time to explain the change to me so I would know exactly what was going on. They said too many rumors and lies out there. That is so true.

7-8 years ago I remember both Big five and Walmart asking for ID and asking me to fill out a form, sign a register and track what I bought. I promptly walked out.
I started reloading this spring to avoid this garbage. Two weeks ago I broke down an bought some ammo from the local shop for convenance. I only had to provide a drivers licensee. I however do not doubt for a minute that other retailers are going above and beyond.
I will still produce 95% of my own ammo. I used to be worried about government lists until I realized I'm probably on most of them already.

My son and I are planning on reloading also--but we are not at that point yet. Went to a mom and pop gun shop today, they said that real id was all they needed, but couldn't speak for Walmart. I will continue to buy ammo at Walmart--I just know their rules now.

And one I am now glad I am not near. It was great to visit back in the 80s and 90s when I lived closer

Growing up here has been a blessing and a curse. A truly magnificent state, and yet rotting. The rest of the union should be shaking. But no, jokes and scorn

I don't only blame my state. NOT a single national politician has given even a single sincere effort in my lifetime. They may give lip service after the fact. Way after the fact. Just the facts!

Update--two days later--now Walmart accepts just the real id (golden bear on license), they are using a printed manual to walk themselves through the ammo purchasing process. Still took 15 minutes.

...in this case they got stuck with a government wished on them by a majority of hard left extremists who rule with an iron fist, the only thing they hate worst than the 2nd is the 1st, which is a battle they are also winning. I know many fine people who have fled and the exodus continues, their tax base declines, and where does it go from there? The problem is that extremists are satisfied with hollow victories.

It's a curious state, ain't it?

My kids were watching a video on a UFO World Congress in Spain ...a speaker claimed alien/human hybrids are plotting against earth. When a man yelled what BS ...another said quite clearly, "It's obvious you've never been to California sir" at which point it became chaos. Why the kids were watching, rain had canceled our range romp.
