What are y'all's thoughts on the Remington 770. I have one in 243 and the bolt is rough, the gun is way too heavy for the caliber, the magazine spring has barely any tension, and the scope ain't nothing to brag about.

My thought is that you have a perfect example of the rifle. Like @Robert said, there are plenty of better options in the price range. So, if considering another one, I would expect it to be the same. A Savage Axis or Ruger American would be better options.

You can still find a Yugoslavian Mauser in 8mm for less than most commercial bolt actions.

It will come with rock solid iron sights and be capable of killing everything except perhaps large bears.

Ammo isn't as cheap as it used to be, but not wildly out of line with 308.

What are you wanting to do with the rifle?

You’re talking to the King of Cheap Rifles here! I own the aforementioned CVA, Ruger, AND Thompson Center. Any of them would be and were my choices over a current Remington. To me the Compass is the favorite overall but the Ruger is more similar than different, and the CVA’s strength is its handy size and balance.

Any of them makes a fine working rifle on a modest budget. I found several moons ago a used Winchester Shadow bolt action that turned out to be my most accurate centerfire. Back when if I recall correctly the hang tag was $219, not sure what they go for nowadays.

Get rid of it. Only thing I ever liked about that rifle was it was bolt action with a detachable magazine. Everything else about it was junk. I would rather have a Handi rifle than anything Remington makes right now.

I'm planning on trading in my Remington 770 and Mossberg 702 for a Marlin 336, do yall think it will run cheap ppu 170 grainers
Marlin is junk. They are owned by the same ppl as Remington. I see them all the time with way to high of front sights, broken barrel band screws and broken firing pins.

Im thinking the OP is looking at a used 336 for $280 and was inquiring as to what else might be within that budget for comparison. I also don’t believe we can declare all Marlin current production “junk”, only that they ought to be scrutinized for certain recurring flaws.

I don't know why it wouldn't, but why would you want to? I can get Winchester or Remington 150 or 170 grain loads locally for under $20/ box. Matter of fact, I picked up 3 boxes of Winchester 170's on Friday for $35 OTD at the LGS. I know my rifle will shoot them well, and I know they're well made cartridges. PPU cartridges don't excite me. Not trying to be a snob, but I just don't care for them. On their 30 WCF load, I really don't like the bullet. I'd far prefer a round nosed bullet instead of the flat one they load. If you'll look around, I'm sure you'll find several good deals on ammo. Which, I might add, is just as fun as shooting the stuff up!
