I have a top break .32 six shot revolver. It says US Revolver Co on top of the barrel rib. The number under the left grip is 96408, no letter prefix. It does not have a "hammer the hammer" transfer bar. It has US grips.

I have a few questions about it.

Is a US Revolver distinct from an Iver Johnson revolver, or would a US Revolver barrel fit perfectly on an Iver Johnson frame?

Does the number under the grip without question indicate a US Revolver?

Should it be fireable as single action, or is it supposed to be double action only?

Should the firing pin be hidden except when fired? Should it be visible only momentarily when hit by the hammer? (When the hammer is down on mine, the pin is extended.)

I can feel a detent when pulling the hammer back and I wondered if perhaps it is worn, thus not allowing the double action or not making the hammer bounce back after firing, to allow the pin to recess.

I know this is a lot of queries, but I would appreciate some info before I go in and try to repair or replace things. Mick

These revolvers were made for a number of years and as you know, the U.S. Revolver Co brand was an off-label variant by Iver Johnson and thus might have different features than that of an Iver Johnson in the same caliber. Pictures would help those other THR members be able to identify what you have and when it was made. One thing to watch out for is that there are different .32 rounds and Iver Johnson mfg spanned the changeover from blackpowder to smokeless and the .32 S&W to the .32 S&W Long.

You might find this thread useful from another forum

If the hammer is exposed and you can thumb-cock it, it can be fired single action. The first click you hear when thumbing the hammer back is to clear the firing pin so its spring can push the pin out of the just-fired primer. You won't be able to open the gun otherwise, as the firing pin will lock the gun until it is retracted.

I don't know if barrels interchange, but I'd bet they will... at least between guns of approximately the same age. BTW all U.S. Revolvers of any age are strictly black powder guns. Shooting factory smokeless won't blow the gun apart, but will stretch the frame and loosen the latch.
