Is anybody going to San Antone?
IMG_20190915_165620015.jpg IMG_20190915_165614363.jpg I rescued this thing from a local yard sale for 80 bucks. Seems mechanically fine, had to take alot of surface rust off and the blueing is maybe about 30 percent. I have two questions. Is this relief cut in the middle of the barrel factory? And also what year would this have been made serial number is 31352XX

I thought the dovetail looked too far forward, but my post 64 94 has the dovetail in the same place. The rear sight is on a leaf that extends back towards the action with the actual sight only 1.25 inches from the receiver.

Looks like it's wearing a Williams FP. I'd suggest a Twighlight aperture. Depending on the current front sight, Marbles makes a nice one in fake ivory... real easy to see in a hurry.

wouldn't you want to put a blank in that relief cut? not that I know, really just asking - seems like you would want that filled in with something solid.

What a great score! That's a right handsome looking carbine. You can get a blank to fill that dovetail or a blank that is drilled and threaded to hold an additional peep sight....say like a ghost ring.

From what a gunsmith told me, the nickel steel Winchester used at the time is bad to resist re-bluing. I'm sure the barrel, magazine tube, and other steel parts will take a good blue and I'd do that myself at home. But as far as any rust on the reciever, I'd suggest first scrubbing it off with steel wool and 3-in-1 oil, and then just keeping it wiped down. But that's me... BTDT... YMMV. I really can't comment on cerakote.

I was going to suggest a folding rear sight, I have them on my 94ae .44 and Marlin 1895’s that all wear peeps. Just as easy to put in as a blank and it can be functional should the peep need to come off.

In any event, you have a great $80.00 find!

Stay safe.

Have any recommendations on where to get one? I already ordered the blank but I could switch out if I need to

I got mine from Midway.., but Brownells and others have them, too.

If the dovetail cut has a bit of taper from the original sight installation I believe the sight is installed by inserting the base into the right side and moving it towards the left (with muzzle facing away from you). Always try the fit first before tapping with a soft gunsmiths hammer or punch so you’re not cramming it in the wrong way.

Stay safe.

Ok, so I found a box of Winchester .30-30 I loaded a couple to cycle the action. The first round would not get on the elevator unless I really worked the lever, then when bringing the lever up the ejector will load the cartridge almost into battery until the last bit and I have to again really work that lever to get it into battery. I'm thinking a weak mag tube spring for the first issue any thoughts on the second? Maybe this is why it was 80 bucks?

I got mine from Midway, too. It's Lyman's #16 and they make three heights.

The new blank or rear sight will have a bevel to the left side that goes into the dovetail's right side... yes, with the rifle pointed away from you.

Actually the receivers during this period weren’t blued at all. They were black chromed. And your gunsmith told you right. You can’t re-blue one of these for love nor money. Winchester never would disclose the content of the alloy or offer any information about how one could be refinished. If it were mine, I would send it to Bob Cogan at accurate plating and weaponry, Inc. and ask for recommendations. Might even have him hard chrome the rifle. He’s one of the best in the business. You got an outstanding deal for $80! Good find!!!

FYI you are most likely going to need a taller front sight with that Williams peep sight. That has always been the case with any rifle that I put a peep sight on.
