Since muffs and plugs cover a broader frequency range than either alone, remember that muffs over plugs provides the greatest hearing protection you can get without a suppressor. Understand that electronic muff don't cancel the noise, they simply cut out the mic/speaker of the muffs as they detect the high intensity impact noise. (Noise canceling muffs like Bose function differently and don't protect from impulse noise).

But, plugs do not protect the mastoid area around the ear like muffs. That bone picks up the vibrations from the shot and transmits it to your middle/inner ear are. Shotgunning I use muffs; metallic gets plugs and muffs.

Unfortunately that horse has already left the barn for many of us older shooters. I wear hearing aids so plugs are out of the question.

Then you should be wearing muffs.
Well I do now all the time. Unfortunately they create their own problems covering the aids. Feed back unless I turn the hearing aids down all the way, then I have problems with range commands. I have a pair of voice amplified shooting muffs, they help. Rimfire and center fire up to target velocity 38s are tolerable with out muffs or hearing aids. But on the range the muffs stay on.

Always foam earplugs … sometimes I do add muffs over the top, never just the muffs..

Walkers and yes they Work when I remember to change batteries. Some of my hearing problems at 78 is genetic, service in the engine room of a navy ship in the early sixties some and machine work some, gunfire didn’t help but wasn’t that much except field discharges hunting over the years. It accumulates I guess. It’s gone, not totally but significant.

Plugs and muffs.

A question on the subject of ear protection: Because of the eustachian tube connection, should you keep your mouth closed when shooting?
