I am not a gunsmith and I do not want to change caliber or sporterize my mauser. I am looking for a GOOD if not new barrel for my M24/47 rifle. Where can I get one?

Numrich has them for $42.

No idea on the quality but I understand that if you call them they will send you the best one on hand.

One thing to note about the Mauser 24/47 or its sibling m48, the barrels have a unique feature, on the breech face the barrel has a projection (aka boss) that encircles the cartridge head for "safety". On a used barrel, the barrel may not "time" to your extractor and require you to make another cut for your extractor clearance. A few folks apparently thinned their extractor which I would not do personally. Some Mauser barrels time just fine and have adequate headspace while others do not and this depends largely on the manufacturer variance on the receivers and how much fitting of the barrel to the receiver/bolt combination was necessary to headspace the rifle.

The 24/47 barrel is the same as the m48 except for the sights and there are a few New Old Stock Yugo Mauser barrels floating around ebay or gunbroker from time to time that have never been installed on a rifle. You will need to make the extractor cut in the barrel projection and also these may require a chamber reamer as I cannot recall whether these were short chambered or not. Alternatively, these may be long chambered which requires a lathe to correct.

The Lothar 98 barrels will not have the safety barrel projection and I would find out whether any other changes to your receiver or bolt is necessary for them.

I have replaced barrels on both K98ks and M48s ... but no 24/47s.

If the 24/47 barrels are duplicates of the M48s, the barrels are a little bit shorter (perhaps ½"?) and the stepping is slightly different from that of the K98k ... meaning that K98k barrels will probably not play nicely with 24/47 or M48 stock wood barrel channels. :)

I mention that because I glanced at the Lothar site and saw none list specifically for 24/47 or M48s. Perhaps I missed them.

Just something of which to be aware.

Good luck with your project, CHBMSPT, and Welcome to THR! :)

Aha, that is the reason why the Yugos shortened some 98k stocks so they could use their new 24/47 and m48 barrels on the older 98k captured receivers. I never could figure out why they did that. Thanks for posting this.
