I recently acquired a "Navy Arms" 1858 New Model Remington Army made by Pietta. It is in amazing condition, even appearing unfired. I am wanting to purchase a .45 Colt conversion cylinder for it. My question is:

I understand the date code of "AP" indicates a 1986 mfg date. I've read on various forums that Pietta revolvers need to be made in the year 2000, or later in order to use the conversion cylinders. Any truth to this? Thanks in advance.

No that is not true per se, however there have been some dimensional and tolerance changes over time with Pietta's manufacturing process so It's likely that a new manufacture cylinder will drop right in or at least very close to it with a recently manufactured revolver. It may take more fitting to utilize that same recent manufacture cylinder with an older revolver. I believe Taylor's will do the fitting if you send them your revolver.

Looking at the Howell Arms website (makers of conversion cylinders), they don't say anything about the permissible vintage of Pietta guns. But there's a distinction for Uberti guns made before 2005, and those made in 2005 and later. On the newer Uberti guns, a bevel needs to be filed on the outside edge of the hand, in order for the conversion cylinder to work properly. (I had to do this on mine. It's a very simple thing really.)

I have a Navy Arms Remington with adjustable sights that was made by Pietta. I bought it in 1982, my first BP revolver. I also have a Traditions Pietta Remington that I bought in 2015. The frame of the newer revolver is quite a bit larger and the cylinder will not fit in the 1982 revolver.
