I been reloading now for a about a year so I’m pretty green and have a lot to learn and I strictly run savage rifles it’s what I prefer so don’t bash to hard. The newest rifle I been working on is a savage 110 hunter in 243 I run a 75 grain v max and 80 grain Barnes ttsx with with Winchester brass fed 210 match primer and Reloader 17 and no matter what I do to the load it absolutely loves max load and im getting quite a bit of pressure ejecter marks flattened primers even have gotten a split neck and I don’t like that. my ? Is what can I do to still get 1/2 inch groups at 200 yards but not run a max load switch powders or brass or what? I would love to be able to run a mild load in it with the same accuracy

Welcome, to THR. I like imr 4350 and imr 4064 for 243. There are a 100 things you can try, just do one at a time and see what happsns. I split neck is no big deal they just my be getting work harden.

I’ve found my Savage 110 was really finicky with both charge weight of powder and overall length.

Thanks for the feedback with the 75 grain v max with 45.5 grains of Reloader 17 5 thousands off lands and and with the 80 grain Barnes it shoots best with 43.1 grains of Reloader 17 5 thousandths off lands I’ve tried back it off the lands but it starts spreading out and I know I can lower charge and be safer but I expect that out of my rifles or atleast in that ballpark anything less to me ain’t worth having I’m an avid coyote hunter and if one gets hung up at 450 yards if I do my part I expect to be able to knock his eye out

Welcome to the forum. I've used several powders in my savage 243, imr 4350 is the one I used most, but got great results with imr and h 4895, blc2, and win 760. If you try 760 get magnum primers for better ignition on slow burning ball powder.

With reloads there is usually accuracy nodes at the lower end of the charge scale as well as at the top end.

I must ask what your coal is? How tight is your chamber? How many times have you fired your cartridges?

You might even try heavier bullet weights like 90 or 100 gr, or with a different ogive.

RL-17 is a powder that is sensitive to temperature. I used it in one load development and started getting major over pressure signs when the ambient temperature started raising. So developing your loads in cooler temp and testing them in hotter temps will give you over pressure signs. I moved to one of the newer temp stable powders by Hodgons and IMR. Gave up a little velocity but no longer have to worry about over pressure.

Unfortunately, no one is going to be able to definitively answer that because reloading takes trial and error for a particular rifle. I have had good results with IMR 4064 and lighter bullets in 243 Win. I have also had success with IMR 4350 and IMR 4831 with heavier bullets. Hodgdon has similar extreme powders with temperature coatings also. I would probably stick (pun intended) with extruded powders for accuracy, instead of near max charges of ball powder (like Superperformance) since the goal is accuracy at a charge weight that is not near max. I also wouldn't get caught up in how far north of 3,400 fps the 75gr vmax it is pushed, since the expansion threshold of that bullet is approximately 1,600 fps.

Imr4166 for just about anything under 85 gr, 85-90 imr4451, 95-100 h1000

here's what I use in my single shot new England firearms 243win I use sierra 100gr bullets with Winchester's 760 powder at 37.6grs which is around 2,700fps and this using Winchester magnum primers my gun loves this load! also the cases need to be annealed often so the necks don't split! but don't worry to much because case splits will happen and I just toss them in the brass pile for the iron yard but yeah if you want the cases to last a bit longer case annealing will help! :)

I agree with Troy, IMR 4350 for the 100 grain bullets and IMR 4064 for the 70-75 grain bullets in .243 Win. hdbiker

Try moly coated bullets. Keep the speed for the barrel harmonics but reduce pressure with less friction. Also to add accuracy try possibly just neck sizing or a small shoulder bump back.
