"Sandy Hook promise" has seen fit to upload a "back to school essentials" video on youtube yesterday. It now has over 1.3 million views, and comments are disabled. It is linked in numerous news articles, and I don't think there are any parental controls on it. It starts out relatively benign, but then quickly shifts into chaos, with running, screaming, kids breaking windows, and even realistic looking blood on a victim. IMO, it is overly graphic and sick, and serves to TERRORIZE school age kids and parents, and demonize those who don't blindly follow their agenda.

These are propaganda disguised as PSAs.

Since this is Activism instead of General Hand Wringing & Complaining, what do we DO about them? Make sure everyone we know, from the School Board to FaceBook, to the places that show these videos, are told the following.

While we grieve for all the victims of any mass shooting we understand the trauma of those left behind after the violent death of a child. Sometimes that trauma leads to unintended consequences. In the case of school shootings we do more harm than good exposing children and parents to emotional gut punches intended to "prepare/protect" and frighten because school shootings are in fact exceptionally rare. We repeat these blows to the psyche of children with drills and videos creating and then reinforcing fear in something that simply shouldn't be expected to be experienced. We do this instead of putting the same effort into addressing the root cause of these tragedies, bullying and emotional/mental health neglect at school/home/community,because they are easy and it is easier to blame others (the "gun lobby", "guns", "gun owners", "NRA", ...) than to do the real hard work.

What we can do is point out that these intentionally traumatic videos and practices go too far and are not the answer, that they're driven by grief and manipulated by political opportunists, that they do much more harm than good.

Mass shootings understandably create outpourings of public horror and outrage. Nevertheless, and contrary to common media depictions and the gen-eral public’s beliefs, mass shootings are extremely rare events.

Due to their sensational nature, mass shootings receive a considerable amount of attention in the media. Despite their rarity, not all shootings garner the same coverage. The present study examines characteristics of newsworthiness among 90 shootings between 2000 and 2012. Using a media distortion analysis of articles in The New York Times, specific consideration is given to how offender characteristics, victim counts, and locations of the events impact the newsworthiness of each case. The findings indicate that race/ethnicity and victim counts are the most salient predictor of whether or not a shooting was covered, with perpetrators of Asian and other descent and those events with higher victim counts generating more prominent coverage (measured as higher article and word counts), whereas incidents occurring in locations other than schools yielded less coverage. Implications from the findings, both for the general public and media practices, as well as study limitations, also are considered.

Mass Violence Is a Rare EventDespite the fear and public scrutiny they evoke, mass shootings are statistically rare events. Mass shootings accounted for less than two-tenths of 1 percent of homicides in the United States between 2000 and 2016. Even school shootings, the most tragic of such events, are infrequent. People are more likely to intentionally kill themselves with a gun than to be killed by a gun in a mass shooting or other type of homicide.

Typical Propaganda. So common in these days. Over use of sensationalism, no facts, use of fear etc. Another form are just out right lies. Example are the School Systems where I live. The School board voted to put in a few add on's to the school Security System and then went on to tell how the Public schools are not safe. After having been in the Electronic Security for 4 decades, I had a chance to survey one of them. It was a total JOKE. So full of holes and the worst design you could imagine. They are totally worthless for actual security. The School board is full of outright lies. But the Public buys into it.
