The bad news is that I've got to spend another loooooong week in Cleveland in mid-August. The good news is I got an e-mail reply from Ohio AG office yesterday that they may have reciprocity agreement with Tejas signed by then. (It is supposedly in Texas' hands, just waiting on signature by the appropriate honcho.)

In order to comply with Ohio's screwball "vehicle carry" provision while driving, (in addition to probably the PM9) I'm contemplating taking my little S&W 317. It is only about 11 ounces loaded and has a little internal peg through the bottom of j-frame grip. I could run a bright orange string through the bottom of the grip and hang it around my neck! Ya reckon that would be "in plain sight" enough?

Other comments/suggestions welcome, especially from those in the area who are having to try to comply with that re-dick-u-lousy provision (in what otherwise appears to be a pretty decent new law).

LOTS of discussion on this one.

On OFCC's forums...

BEST advise, don't give `em an EXCUSE to pull you over.

Beyond THAT, be certain to NOT TOUCH the firearm while IN the car with hands or fingers. (We pretty much determined touching the holster is okay ;)

If stopped by a LEO, hands at 2 & 10 o'clock, then when s/he approaches, let him/her know you have a CHL from TX, and you ARE carrying.

MOST of us are going with "if it's in "plain site" from SOMEWHERE outside of the vehicle, it's FINE, if some asshat LEO decides to "exercise" his/her bully muscles, all the better to "set a prescident" and better "define" the law. Also, seems like I got something not TOO long ago where that provision is being challenged in court - but obviously won't be "fixed" by August ;)

MOST of our LEOs are great people... but those who aren't tend to be REAL stinkers. (Like the Franklin Co. Sheriff - what a dweeb.)

If ya want, I can dig up some of the better discussions... OR probably a better idea is to consult OFCC's website and check out their FAQ...(about the CCW law).

I appreciate the feedback - and will certainly do some more reading if the reciprocity agreement flies.

Another oddball possiblity that hit me yesterday is maybe leaving PM9 in ankle holster all the time, but strapping to top of left arm   (or knee  ) while driving, then putting it where it belongs once stopped.

I'm so acclimated to putting the gun(s) on in the morning, then leaving them there all day, that it could be difficult to adjust to all the unnecessary handling. :banghead:

I don't have a license as of yet (I spend almost my entire day either in a car or in one of several government buildings), but it is my recollection that the weapon has to be -holstered- in plain sight. Dangling from your neck would not be a good idea.

That is correct..It states "HOLSTERED, in plain sight, or locked in a box, the box must also be in plain sight, or locked in the glove compartment..

Actually, I do have a Hedley pocket holster that fits j-frames. It would lay flat against the chest ... I was somewhat joking about the string thing.

Thanks for feedback guys, but I got some not-so-good news from TX AG office this morning. :( It seems the TX AG legal beagles do not believe the OH background checks are up to snuff enough to meet TX provisions for reciprocity. And the Ohio legislature (currently in session?) could have to fix the issue before reciprociity is going to happen. :(

And hopefuuly, they'll fix that vehicle-carry provision while at it.

Don't feel lonesome Buckeyes. We too had some "flaws in the laws" that took a while to get shook out. And still workin' on others.

I hear ya there! :D

If it's any consolation, you might have a look here:

It sounds like you're driving, so a detour through Chillicothe wouldn't take you that far out of your way. I took my kids to see this ~ 25 years ago when they were 6 & 8 years old. All 3 of us sat there with our jaws wide open for the entire show. Impressive doesn't come close to describing it.

And you betcha,,,there's lot's of guns,,,cannon even.

Thanks for the thought Hal. That looks somewhat similar to a musical drama ("Texas") that's been done In Palo Duro Canyon TX each summer for several decades.

A couple of year back, driving that "southern route" into and out of Ohio involved travel in states where TX license is recognized in all. Last trip tho ( the quicker way) included a discreet dash thru Illinois. I was optimistic that this time, I'd at least be legal while in Ohio.

With time constraints this trip, about the only "side shows" I anticipate are possibly the submarine tour and/or Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in downtown Cleveland. I figure that might be worth the effort since I'll be there already. And heck, David Crosby might even be around to provide stoned escort with his .45.

The only advice I could give is once you enter the Ohio line, the freeway speed limit is 65. I wouldn't travel over 70. Put the cruise on and watch for the white OSP cruisers (they have no unmarked cars for traffic stops). Oh, one more thing, Ohio is HOT and HUMID in August. Have a safe trip.

"Ohio is HOT and HUMID in August."

Yep, I supect that's quite true, especially in Cleveland right next to the lake.

But, hey, living in Tejas, I'm rather acclimated to it. (Ya ever been to Houston in the summertime ? !!! )

Just before I leave for Cleveland, gotta run to Austin and move daughter from apartment into a house, so I should be in good shape for whatever weather Ohio has to offer. At least in Austin I'll still be able to wear shorts with the airweight 5-holer in 'em. In Cleveland though, I'm afraid it's going to be at least slacks - in the midst of lawyers and white-collar criminals. (Ok, El Tejon, *alledged* white-collar criminals ;) ).
