I am trying to decide between the 226 and 229 to add as my EDC , I am a big guy and carry a Glock 22 to 19 most of the time or a Glock 43 in my pocket if I am very lightly dressed but have decided to try a sig , I have shot both and like them but would love some advice from others who have experience carry them .

I prefer the 226. I don't find it any harder to conceal as grip length is extremely similar and I carry IWB so the barrel length doesn't matter much. Weight is quite similar.

Between the two the full grip of the 226 fits my hands better. With mec gar mags the 226 also holds 18+1 with little added bulk.

But both are good.

I am leaning toward the 226 because of the grip length , the full size grip in my hand fits better too , I am going for the pistol whichever one in 40 if that makes a difference ?

In my safe, the 229 gets more love than the 226s, including the X5. In California, San Joaquin county we are "allowed" to carry only 3 pistols on our license. My 229 is on the list, my 226 is not.

The parameters for answering that question are too subjective, you are the only person who can make that decision. But be careful giving Sig a try, they tend to multiply like Tribbles (Star Trek reference) and before you know it you will own both (or several) and will be making that decision each day before you walk out the door.

I carried the 228 (similar in size to the 229) in the mil long ago. I also used the 226, but not in the mil. I prefer the 228/229 size over the full size. I Also prefer 9mm.

Ive carried both, and prefer the 226's. They both carry the same, the 226 just fits my hands better, and I shoot them a tad better.

I agree with the thought of trying both and see whats works best for you.

Keep in mind the newer-current version of the 229 is fatter than the 226 and 228 in the frame, and the weight is about the same as the 226. It may or may not effect hand fit, it did with me on all but the Legion model of the 229.

My only complaint to carrying the 226 or 229 is weight, my 226 is over 40 oz loaded and gets a little onerous in the summer heat. Though I'll likely bring it back out for winter carry once the weather cools.

For me it used to be p226 for OWB and p22p for IWB primarily due to barrel length but also my p226's all had rails while my p229 predated rails and so are 'cleaner'. I have since moved on to a p365XL for OWB and a p365 for IWB / pocket carry.

226 I prefer.

unlike the glock 17 and 19...I see use for the 17 and the 19. the 229 I see no use for and dont care for it. its subjective but the 229 is clunky and thick like the 226 but the 229 isnt any easier to carry, for me anyways.

I have P-228s, P-229s, P-226s, P-365s, P-320s ...

Given a choice, were I to know in advance what gun I was going to actually need that day, it'd be the 226, no question. I love my 226s, especially the Legion. All carry and conceal well in a good high-rise pancake OWB (i.e., Kramer Belt Scabbard, Galco Concealable). As noted, with the superb Mec-Gar 18-round mags, wow, great package.

Even when I spend time in Florida or Arizona, I can conceal one comfortably in a good IWB with a light loose shirt over it.

@OP -- the P-226 was born to shoot the .40 S&W, perhaps one of the two or three best .40 platforms out there.

Hey Jasper,

I have joined the Sig family, acquiring and rebuilding both an older 226 and a youngish 229. For me, the 226 is an OWB heater, while IWB is the 229. I can't tell a wit's difference in accuracy, I have fiber optics on the 226 and Ameriglo night sights on the 229. Both simply rock.

Old Dog, you have a beautiful pair of Sigs there. I'd recommend keeping that knife point off your leather jacket!

I'm another one who prefers the P229 or P228 to the P226. For me the P226 was just a bit larger in certain areas compared to the other two, to make it slightly less comfortable to use (I also prefer the ergonomics of the E2 grip design). Found the P229 very easy to carry and with the SRT a dream to shoot.

I'll take the diminutive, but very capable, 365 for carry - the weight alone makes it a very good choice.

There it is folks, further proof the 365 is the new "Get a Glock" of gun forums ;)

Upon further thought if I was wanting to EDC a Sig pistol and was OK with DA/SA (not my preference), I think I'd lean towards the 2022 as I've really started to appreciate a lighter EDC.

Yes it is, and Glock is desperate to catch up. 365 has more capacity, better trigger, and is smaller and lighter...........what's not to like?

It's too thin for MY hands, but that's not germaine to this thread, I only commented because it is exactly the whole "Get a Glock" comment on every thread regardless of the topic that spawned generations of Glock haters, the 365 has that new title as it shows up like clockwork on a 226 vs 229 ( not at all anywhere near a 365 in any aspect other than manufacturer) thread.

And hey, just as annoying as Get A Glock.

I was simply pointing this out in a hopefully, reasonably, jockular manner.

I shall derail no further.

I’ve carried the P226 for many years and later an SP2022. The 2022 is about the size of a P229 but I didn’t find it any different to carry than the larger P226.
