Odd question about pistol brass

I’ve had 9mm and 380 inside 40 or 45 real snug. Sorry I don’t recall as it’s been awhile since I’ve cleaned range pickup brass.

I'll tell you a 9mm and a .41MAG case snuggle up pretty tight, particularly with crushed walnut... but others are right, the 9mm/.40 combo is probably pretty snug.

9mm is tapered but case thickness and the fact that all have internal tapers, many will nest. 380, 40/10, 45 would be the most common if you eliminated the tapered 9mm.

.40 will nest inside .45ACP/GAP
9mm, even though not straight wall cased, will nest inside .40
.38Spl/.357Mag and .223/5.56 will get stuck inside .40 cases

Interestingly enough when my parents called and said your birthday is coming up do you have any ideas I gave them lymans 50th, pelican v300 pistol case, 50 cal ammo cans, and a pistol brass sorter Screenshot_20190927-043922_Chrome.jpg

My ultimate "Tur-duc-ken", and one I won't repeat, is taking all the pistol brass I shoot and picked up and doing a "quick rinse" to get the mud off before pin tumbling.

The large grit of the plowed field worked it's wonder while I shook the bucket.
At the bottom were several confounders of cases stacked so tight I needed to use a pull hammer to separate them. Well, just the expensive Fifty A.E. When I finally got those off, I scrapped the rest.

But for the record, a 50AE will eat a 45 Auto, which will consume a completely random 40SW case that came from who knows where, that has one of my 9MM cases stuffed into it, that also had a bent 22 inside!
Thoroughly wedged tight with bits of the Earth...

I recently bought a 32 auto. I imagine those will fit/get stuck in there somewhere...:D

The lesson I learned is that cases get sorted first. Then they get cleaned...
:)

9mm in .40 then both of those in .45s.....
.32s seem to fit in 9mm.
Managed to have 4 stuck together after tumbling an unsorted batch of range brass the other day.

Note: This was a quick clean before the "real" one. I sort for that.

In short, any of the common ones that are about .05" in diameter difference will nest quite firmly, particularly with tumbling media in there to fill in the gap!

If you are tumbling a bunch of stuff together, try to throw in the brass in descending size order. In other words, toss in the 45, then the 40/10, then the 9/38/380, then the 32, etc. After about 15 seconds of tumbling in a vibe cleaner, the cases fill with media and will not generally "eat" the smaller cases anymore.

Get the steel .380 plate if you load 9mm on a progressive press.

What is the purpose of this thread? Nezting is a PIA, who cares what cal?

If you have cases nesting in others you want, you didn't sort before cleaning.

Typically nesting is a problem PIA, not something to be desired.

Oops, @ATLDave beat me too it. :)

Except that it does. It didn’t even appear to reduce the frequency of nesting. I’ve watched with the cover off and witnessed cases come up completely empty of media, only to actively seek out and devour the younger, innocent brass.
Oh...and it’s significantly worse if wet tumbling with pins. I’ve ruined cases trying to separate nested cases with pins wedging them together.
It’s why I now sort everything prior to cleaning.

Interesting, because this is just completely contrary to my observed experience over dozens of trials. There must be some difference in what we’re doing or talking.

I am taking about vibratory tumblers. Are you using a rotary tumbler?

My experience was with a vibratory tumbler filled with mixed walnut, corn cob, and dry rice, with a bit of jewelers rouge added to improve polish. I’ve since switched to near 100% wet tumbling, and I sort everything before cleaning. The time I spend sorting is much less than the time I spent un-nesting cases. I also threw away my large tumbler and replaced it with a smaller, Hornady case tumbler....as yet unused.

Weird. Once my larger cases get below the surface of the actively vibe-tumbling media, they really never surface again, much less with enough empty space to accommodate a smaller case.

Indeed, the fact that the media fills the case and then doesn’t move much is why vine tumblers produce brass that is shiny on the outside and black on the inside...

I wonder if the rice changes something about that. My all-cob media really doesn’t do what you’re describing as long as I let the big cases run for a few seconds before adding smaller cases.

Tumble only rifle and 1 cal pistol together.

From OPs original question, it appears he has something in mind for brass that fits together. All the rest of us see this as a PIA.

Please notice, spring 1898, the OP originator, hasn't checked back in on his own thread he started so it must not be important to him.

Troll question?
