Found a Tumblr at the dump!

Wife won't allow me to go to the dump...
Like you I "find" stuff and come home with more stuff than what I was taking there
Even now, I have prior "finds" stashed at my son's house.

Hmmm. I don't think I could find the dump. Haven't explored one since I was a kid.

Retrieving stuff from the dump here is not permitted.

I found a shoe box full of assorted rifle brass there once. And I used 90% of the contents. Then gave away the rest to a couple friends that also reloaded.

Repurposed refuse is the hallmark and mother's milk of any resourceful human.

A few weeks ago I saved this just before it was to be hurled into the hopper.
It should do nicely once mounted on the wall adjacent the bench.



As a carpenter, I get tired of bringing home kitchen cabinets. But I really liked this blue countertop.

A perfectly preserved Hilti powder actuated fastener cabinet is a rare and fitting find!

The shot of the front wouldn't load. Also not pictured, the white square buckets of fruit salad that I help the local university reuse. They stack, come with lids and strainers, and best of all I can see the six foot stacks from the street when they toss them out!

My ex-fil was always accused of bring more stuff home from the dump than what he took.
But then he was one who could make something really useful from a pile of doggie do-do.

All I ever found at the dump was clothes that fit better. Now the dump charges to get in and dump.... no picking allowed!

Our family business for about 30 years was rubbish collection. I drove a trash truck around a neighbor hood while my father and older brother loaded trash in the front loader, when I was 15. I worked "the route" every summer from 9th grade 'till I graduated and several years after full time. I found everything in the trash, from live animals to cash (I once emptied a barrel and saw a white rat tumble out. He looked at me and I picked him up and took him home, "Flower" was my daughter's pet for mebbe 10 years). At some time or another every item that was ever used or purchased by a person wound up in the trash. I kept and used a lot of stuff from TVs to kitchen appliances, car parts, and all kinds of other stuff, except I wouldn't wear used clothes...

Scrounging wasn't allowed at the dump as a small company had a contract with the dump owners for salvage rights. At that time salvaging was a pretty profitable business; scrap metals were the largest money maker. Used lumber wasn't allowed for home building so all scrap lumber (a lot from home/business remodeling) was trucked to Mexico for a good profit...

My Lyman orange,probably 1970's swivel gubment style chair,came from the dump. It's my main chair in the loading room. Love the orange,haha.... would be butt ugly anywhere except along the Lyman gear.

Have gotten a bunch of neat,usable stuff. Found a 50' minty #8 extension cord along with a really nice garden hose one time. Would bet anything,some guys wife chucked it,"cleaning" the garage.

Got a minty full upright school locker. Wiped it down,scuff sanded it and shot paint on it to match one of our metal lathes. I keep lubricants in it,and is parked right by the machine.

Love that Hilti cabinet above! I've used smaller versions of it next to pcs of equipment to serve as tooling cases.

Think I got a small Hilti case somewhere not being used. Going to find it and shoot some crinkle brown on it then use it as a hang on,side box to the "little" Kennedy machinist chest/cabinet in the loading room.

* It's an early Kennedy,thinking late 1930's. Lower box is much smaller than current boxes. With a std 520 on top of ho made "riser".

Designated Dumpster Diver! And since I’m a commercial diver by trade it means I dive all the time wet or dry!
We have special tools of the trade also!

I've never made a good find at the dump per say, but I do kind of enjoy repurposing things that folks are going to get rid of. My dad used to walk past the dumpster of the company he worked for years ago and it was a large multimillion dollar corporation. As things got replaced they would get placed by the dumpster if there wasn't room in the dumpster itself. I'm talking things like drafting stools, office chairs, large plastic cases that were essentially hard shell luggage with wheels and telescoping handles. He'd bring them home and find a purpose, or stash them until a purpose became apparent.

I inherited a very heavy duty (like 40 pounds of steel, plastic, and cloth) five legged office chair. I still use it to this day to lift dumbbells in and to sit in at my reloading bench. The cases have been repurposed to hold my tool heads and powder throws.

Unfortunately the local dump prohibits picking, and the outfit I work for prohibits dumpster diving. So my pickings are rather meager.

We moved offices a few years ago, and went from a cool old building with real desks, to a crap building with cubicles. I happen to have a private office and real desk, but others aren't so luck. When the old office was shut down the people in charge literally had employees destroy the old and perfectly usable desks. It was such a waste. I mean I could have scrounged two or three steel desks, or a wood one or two. They would have made excellent reloading tables. We could have donated them to a local school. Nope. Throw them out.

Found the Hilti case.... had been next to a BP mill so "was" painted grey to match,with a bunch of racing stickers on it. But was pulled down and hiding behind a big drillpress.

Naptha,is used as a reducer(along with a hardener) for enamels when spraying equipment. It also is "goo gone" for getting racing stickers off Hilti boxes,haha. And,it is what you clean rifle triggers with.... so stickers got,gone.

Wet sanded the grey with 400 and shot 3 coats of crinkle black on it. Will let it do it's thing and in a few days hit it with Kennedy brown. Then post pics.
