Anybody else tuning up hunting rifles today?

Bedded the stock and forend on my 1894. Will be doing the same with my 444 and the stock on my 20 ga slug gun.

Don’t know if it improves accuracy at all but it’s a fun little project and at the very least protects your stock from cracking at the recoil bearing point.

I’ve got to do a little stock work on my Mountain Rifle. There’s a raised place in the barrel channel forend that seems to be affecting accuracy. Can’t decide if it’s worth bedding or not.

View attachment 862671 News flash: it’s still hot in Mississippi. Figured I better go ahead and check zero on some rifles that haven’t been out of the safe much this Summer. Anybody else getting ready for cooler weather and hunting season today?
Man, that looks like my kind of work. I wish I could lend a hand!

Didn't tune them up yet, but did load up batches of my pet loads for a few, and some test loads for a few new rifles. I'll get to the range before too long!

Everything ready to go except for checking zeros and some practice. Plan to use two different rifles, one 12 ga. slug gun, and one 44 Mag. revolver depending on which area I'm hunting and how thick the woods are where I am. Gotta get to the range this coming week and get started. IMG_1874.JPG IMG_3214.JPG Sporterized Swedish mauser in 6.5x55 and Marlin 30AS in .30-30 get out the most in a couple areas in a rifle zone. Fully rifled 870 is the dedicated slug gun in a shotgun area... IMG_0159.JPG Ruger Redhawk 44 Mag gets used in either area, especially one in the rifle zone where 50 yards would be a long shot. IMG_0174.JPG Best to be sure of things before you start hunting. I've seen too many guys learn that the hard way.... Make sure everything's ready.

Nice glass on all those.

The more I shoot this M77 in 6.5x55 the more I like it. I honestly think it might be my favorite “hunting rifle”. Previous owner put a good bit of work/money into it and it shows.

Mine sit ready year round.
I did find a box of factory 95nbt for my 240 hiding in my empty brass drawer.
Since switching to all Nikon scopes, with bedded actions, it's a set it and forget it proposition.
That mannlicher stock looks sweet.

It’s definitely a beautiful rifle. I bought it from a fellow THR member. I’m about to go on the hunt for a similar rifle in either 6.5x55 or 243 Win for my wife.

I put 3 through the wringer yesterday. They are ready for action. Didn't shoot my new one yet. Bought a Savage 11 in 338 Federal and stuck a 3X9 VX-2 on it, bore sighted, and set the trigger at 3 lbs. The only ammo I have is 200 gr. Federal Fusion.

That 338 Fed is interesting to me. I’m probably going to start looking seriously at something larger in diameter than .30 cal next year. I’m curious to see how you like it.

I don't "tune up" before hunting season. Hunting SOMETHING is all year long for me. I shoot mine all year long, rarely does a gun I use for any kind of hunting go more than a week with out getting shot.

They don't NEED "tuned" up.

Ron Shirks had a closeout on some Savage 11 XP Hunter Packages with a 3X9 Bushnell and I had to get one. Federal claims 2700 fps with 200 gr, but my manuals show 2500-2600 fps as compressed maximums. I'll chrono everything and we will see.

I hunt pigs year round, but I don’t hunt them with bolt action rifles. My deer rifles don’t get shot much throughout the year, so they get “tuned up” a few months before the season starts. Basically just clean them, make sure all screws are tight and check zero. Everything was good to go today, but I’d rather check and make sure.

Yeah, I’d be happy with that kind of accuracy. How’s the fit and finish on that rifle?

Stock fit could be better where it bears on the receiver. There is a nice gap there now. I just put some acraglas on it and am letting it cure overnight. At least it will no longer be a weak point.

That’s really it though. Sights are nice and straight. Crown and bluing are good. Checkering is good on the stock but crappy on the forend. Don’t know what to say about that except that Marlin should have never even started with their “checkering” and just left the stocks plain.

Nothing today but my HS Precision stock is due to arrive from Stocky's on Tuesday for my model 70. I'm eager to retire that factory tupperware stock it sits in now.

Not yet. We have a gun season "teaser" over thanksgiving weekend, but general gun season doesn't start here until mid Dec. I'm getting ready for archery which starts in 3 weeks.
