I’m going to have a chance to get to the range today and shoot a couple rounds of informal trap.

I can’t recall what choke I’ve had the best luck with in the past. It’s been a while.

My gun is just an 870 wingmaster with the standard 3 tubes Available.

I always shoot full, but when I take someone new to whet their appetite, I put a mod or even cyl choke on so they can hit more easily. It really depends on your goal for the day....just have fun or really try to improve your shooting at flying objects.

I am a shooter that is pretty quick out of the house to shoot, so it doesn't seem to make a big difference what choke I use until I move back to more handicap distance.

My advice is to start with the modified and see how you perform. If that's too easy then move to full and like was said before "know when you are on it good". If you haven't shot in a while I am assuming you are starting on the 16 yard line.

Good luck :)

I'm much they same way, I often use my BRNO SLE for informal trap, and it's choked Skeet and L. Mod. If you shoot fast it doesn't matter much, until you start scooting back. You just have to know your gun.

I fully second that statement. You'll probably miss a couple til you get the feel for it again, but don't worry. It'll come back to you.

Good luck,

Mac

This last Summer was my first trap shooting one and I used the modified choke all season. I got less bad near the end, after I tried sporting and five stand. I might have been a bit more relaxed or confident after those. Let's hope fall will be better. Humbling experiences, indeed. Can't wait for rifle season to come. Very different pleasures.

Depends on who I'm losing to. Sometimes a cross-bar choke and other times a frontal two-hand. If they're a lot bigger than me then a teo-nagi

last wed I shot 50-50 with my 1187 trap with a mod choke and 1-1/8 # 8.5 shot at 1250 fps at the 16 yard line.

we have a young man who has shot 25-25 with a imp cyl choke. I shot beside him that day with the same choke in, but I only shot 22-25. he is very fast and has the reflexs for it while I,m slow and don,t have the reflexs he does, did I mention I,m also old(75).

For the 16, I use IM.

I owned a fixed choke trap gun that was full over modified. It didnt have a barrel selector, either. It was a good singles and doubles gun. I don't know if a long yard handicap shooter would be happy with it, though.

An old friend shot pigeons and Helice with his Perazzi - MX-8, fixed 7 and 10 (.028 and .040), non-selective, fixed choke. You bet against him, you lost. Both of those games make US trap look like child's play - nothing wrong with that gun mentioned.

M or IM. Especially for a beginner. Full just makes you miss more and get discouraged quicker.

I know it's fun to powder a bird with full choke but any break is a score and Mod choke gets more breaks.

Gil and Vicki Ash, 2 very well respected instructors, did extensive testing and found M to be the best for patterns out to 40+ yards. As far as they are concerned, a person need but two chokes, especially for sporting, Skeet and Mod

Child’s play is just fine for me right now. It’s just gratifying to smash flying targets with a shotgun. I have no illusions of Olympic level competition. I’d join an amateur league of some kind if one was nearby, but there isn’t.
