A good friend of mine recently got a transfer to the VA hospital where I work. We were going scouting for deer Saturday morning so I went to stay at his house the night before. Sitting on the couch I was admiring his coffee table when I felt under the edge thinking to myself that would be a good place to hide a piece. Then I actually touch one. He comes out from the bathroom and I commend him on his preparedness. Those gun magnets are the coolest.

Solution 1. Hide guns around the house. Requires having a number of guns that are left loaded and unattended in various locations which may or may not be close enough at hand for use in a time-critical situation and that also requires all the locations be recalled quickly to be effective. This approach generally requires that the guns be relatively unsecured since any level of security would slow their access to an unacceptable level.

Solution 2. Carry a gun. Requires one gun that is never left unattended, that is always secure, that is always in exactly the same location relative to the hand that will need it, that is always within reach.

Wall mounted full length mirrors covering between the studs box covers an AR or pump shotgun, just be careful of wiring abd plumbing. I used hidden hinges and 3 magnetic catches.

Hidden guns are not a very good idea IMO. Between friends who aren't proficient as you, kids, criminals, and fires. I keep everything im not carrying in my safe. When I leave put shotgun up. When I arrive home get it out. Takes but a few extra seconds minutes. Peace of mind is awesome. I have known a few people who had hidden compartments in walls. Guess what they were not family. So if I knew of them I'm sure more people knew. Lucky for them I'm not a thief. And as a side note criminals will tear your place apart until they find what they are looking for. Better to have your carry piece on you and everything else in a good safe.

And if you were a nefarious person instead of a friend, he would be in trouble. I am not a big fan of accessible firearms without a lock or a better hiding space besides just hanging underneath something.

+1

This is an interesting thread. Here we have two sides of the discussion concerning safety vs. security. We each have to assess our perceived security needs and compare those with possible safety concerns. I have friends/associates that take both approaches. Everyone generally makes sure the house rules are understood.

Not a fan. But I have young kids that run around my house so in the safe they go so no one discovers a hidden gun.
Also, We have a storage law here that requires a locked box, or a trigger lock on all guns. If you have an unsecured or unlocked gun in your house you will be arrested, charged, and probably lose your gun license.

I agree with mrmike7189..... our AG makes up firearms laws on
The fly. Funny thing we have a law that says illegal possession of a firearm = 1 yr in jail. To all intents and purposes it’s never enforced. But let a legal gun owner have one unsecured in the house and she’ll bring the full weight of the justice system down on you.

Divorced, no kids, have had a "home invasion" by an inebriated neighbor ~30 years ago, and have kept guns hidden around the house ever since. Two pistols are readily accessible but the gun case in the bedroom has several handguns and rifles (all loaded) with three more on a wall rack, an AK, a SxS 12 ga., and a .357 revolver. Small, hi-lumen flashlights on both the AK and the SxS - JIC.

I know some will call me crazy but I keep pepper spray through out my house. All guns locked up except my carry piece. A can of bear spray on top of fridge. By front door and back door. I have two kids running around. Taught them both how to use the spray. Daughter decided to play around with a can when I left her in my truck to grab RX. Let's say she learned a valuable lesson. Got some in her hair and hand. Felt bad but she knows to respect what it can do.

See I never understand this mentality. Wouldn't it be easier to just carry a pocket pistol?

Just because they're out of sight doesn't mean they're hidden. To truly hide something requires a lot of ingenuity.

I am one that pocket carries all the time even if I have a larger gun on me in public. I don't leave unsecured guns around the home. No kids anymore, but you never know who might stop. I never have to think about it when the plumber, cable guy, or maids come by. At home is easy to keep a small gun on you all the time. When sleeping is when I am most vulnerable and that's where my primary home defense gun is. It's right next to my pillow, secure and easily accessible.

I will also comment from experience that when a thief has the time there will be nothing left untouched. When my Dad went to a VA Home, his place was broken into before we could put it up for sale. There were items from the master bedroom at one end that were now on the floor in the front bedroom. Nothing left untouched, not even in the kitchen cabinets where there was nothing of value, just typical kitchenware. The good thing is I removed all his guns prior to the burglary.

My take.

I like to be comfortable in my home. I typically wear loose shorts or pajama pants in the house when I'm not going to be leaving on a particular day. When I'm fully dressed, I carry compact or full-size pistols strictly OWB, which is my comfort level, even inside the house.

I despise pocket carry in general anyway; again, I like to be comfortable -- especially when relaxing at home. Especially when lazing in the La-Z-Boy recliner ...

I have a very large house in a rural area on acreage. No one comes up my long drive unless they're expected (even the UPS driver). No children (mine are grown up) ever come to visit, all our friends who visit are discreet folks we've known for years (and many either work in, or are retired from, law enforcement).

Fire would be a concern, but most firearms are kept in the safes. Should the house catch fire, any guns lost would be the least of my concerns.

Home invasions and random burglaries have occurred in my neck of the woods. Too often. The scourge of meth up here. But, I have an awesome security systems with 360 degree camera coverage and every access point and window alarmed.

Oh, and we have well-trained GSDs for our companions.

I'm not gonna apologize for having a few handguns hidden around the house, or allow myself to be swayed by folks telling me it's a "bad idea." It may be for you, but don't judge me.

Not everyone's situation is the same.

You know the old saying, "nothing's for sure but death, taxes, and the fact that you'll get lots of judging if you decide to post in a forum on the internet" ;)

I have a gun on me more often then I have underwear on, but I don't have one on my person 24/7. I'm like Old Dog, as I like to be comfortable when I'm at home and have no plans to go anywhere. But whenever I am in my house there is a gun close at hand.
There are four loaded guns in different areas of my house and there's a loaded gun in each of my gun safes.
I live by myself and don't have many people I don't know come over.
My three kids, 36,21 and 15, know where I keep my loaded guns. They also know how to load, unload and shoot them. They even have guns of their own and we have never had a issue with guns in my house.
You may not agree with me, but a secured gun is of no use when it is needed right now. But I don't look at it as being right or wrong. I look at in the same way as the debate on a striker fire gun with, or without a manual safety. Go with what you'er comfortable with.
