The race to compete with the P365 continues, as Smith and Wesson and Canik announced new subcompacts. It looks like they're both comparable to the P365XL, but are around 25 oz as opposed to 20 oz for the XL. I'm not sure if either company includes magazines when they post their weights. S&W offers them in 40 and 45, in addition to their 9mm's. The Canik is wider than the XL, and S&W doesn't tell you the width on their website. I'm a fan of the M&P 2.0's and will most likely pick one up.

They should just come out and say our engineers failed to patent a new magazine that improves mag capacity so we can’t compete with Sig and SA in the micro segment. They’re still nice subcompacts, but don’t say they compete with those 2.

More guns on the market, the better it is for all consumers. Just think fellas, we will get a hybrid stack Glock in about 10 years, seems that’s about how long behind the single stack game they were.

Everything I'm seeing in the S&W material you linked shows an M&P Compact. I own two and have owned them for quite some time. They are a bit smaller than a Glock 19 and have been on the market for a decade at least.

I have no experience with the Canik, but from the pictures it seems to have a much longer grip than either the P365 or the Hellcat. I would put put both of the linked guns in the size category above the micro guns.

M&P has a 2.0 compact with a 3.6 inch barrel. It looks like they shortened the grip for what they call their subcompact, bringing the profile closer to the size of the P365XL. As I mentioned, they are heavier than the XL and I'm assuming wider, although S&W doesn't state the width on their website.

It looks like the Smith is a 2.0 Compact with the 3.6" barrel but they shortened the grip slightly and ship it with 12 round mags. I have a 2.0 Compact with a 4" barrel and it's a fantastic gun, and my go-to for IWB carry. It's heavier and thicker than the P365 but I'd personally trust it a lot more based on the experience I've had with my 2.0C.

This market thrives from both new shooters as well as more experienced ones chasing that "perfect CCW piece". I skipped around for a long time, but I am happily married to my "old" S&W shield 9, for better or worse.

Once my preordered Shield Arms 15 round flush mags for my Glock 48 (or43x) comes in, I’ll have my “Hybrid Glock” to compete, 10 years earlier than anticipated.

Handled the Springfield Hellcat last night at the LGS, very similar to the P365. But I don’t buy Springfield firearms, but it seems like a nice option for competition to the P365.

My gosh, these IMO are not competition. Look at the weight and size. Heck, I will just carry my SR9C. Competition IMO would be reducing the weight and size. Subcompact, Compacts, Micro 9mm. Where does the distinction come from. There must be a cut off somewhere.
Only the marketing departments know where the cutoff is ;)

That M&P subcompact is simply a rebranded M&P Compact. When they introduced the 2.0 it created a size in between the full size and the M&P9c. If someone can find an overall height for the supposed subcompact I would be happy to measure my actual 9c guns to compare.

My understanding is that they released the compact to compete with the Glock 19 and other guns that size. It does look like the original M&P Compact and the 2.0 Subcompact are similar in size. Seeing how they called the Glock 19 sized gun a compact they couldn't call this one a compact as well, which causes some confusion. The subcompact 45 has my interest, as it fills a need. I'm pretty well set with 9's this size or smaller.

The subcompact definitely isn't new except the name - the barrel is the same length and so is the overall length. I can't find the height but I'm willing to bet it's the exact same as my compacts, which would mean they didn't put a redesigned mag into a shorter grip. In other words, their marketing department simply renamed the gun to fit into the lineup better.
The M2.0 (which they designate as a compact) has a 4" barrel and a 15-round magazine which fits in a visibly longer grip (I just checked via the link you provided). The full size version holds 17 rounds and has a 4.5" barrel.

I am all for competition because the consumer always wins. innovation keeps competition going, however there gets to be a point I no longer look at the newest thing. there is only so small I want my handgun to be for several reasons. I grip large guns better, shoot large guns better. I conceal small guns better, but where those lines meet is different for everyone because of caliber choice.

hand size plays a big role in how well you can shoot a gun, and body size/build plays more of a role in how well you conceal a gun than the gun itself. I commend Sig for trying to catch up to S&W, and S&W for trying to catch up to Glock with compact polymer guns.

The 2.0 Compact comes in a 4" barrel version and a 3.6" barrel version, both with 15 round flush mags. This new 2.0 Subcompact appears to be the 3.6" version of the 2.0 Compact with a shorter grip to fit a 12 round mag, probably the same as the original Compact (although I think it had a 3.5" barrel). The full size 2.0 comes with a 4.25" barrel, not 4.5".

For me the ideal type of carry weapon in regards to size, barrel length, capacity, etc. is the Glock 48, Sig P365xl size guns. They provide space for a full hand on the grip, good sight radius and good velocity for penetration and expansion, and a good capacity.

I'll concede that I may have missed the exact numbers, but the point remains that with the introduction of the M2.0 Compact, the former Compact model was now smaller than the new gun, thus prompting a name change.

A friend has 2 different Canik pistols I've shot and both are phenomenal shooters. I'll stick to my Shield 9mms. They have always been reliable and comfortable to shoot.

The thought this brings to my mind is there will be a glut of the older 10 round 9mm subcompacts on the market at really reasonable prices. If I were interested in a 9mm subcompact that is the way I would probably go. I tend to think it best not to go near a new model for 6 months or a year anyway. That way any issues can be discovered & corrected & prices can come down. I prefer to let others be the beta testers.

S&W can predict the future! The M&P Compact first entered the "race to compete with the P365" 12 years ago.
Glock has been selling sub-compacts since 1995....the G26&G27. Thats almost 25 years and still going. My G26 is my primary CCW & probably will always be ?

I have a 9mm Shield and an SR9c. The M&P 2.0 compact is a double stack revamp of the original M&P compact and it is about the size of my SR9c. It is not a completely new design like the Sig & Hellcat

I carried a S&W M&P40c for about ten years and found it to be the perfect compromise between size and capacity. I foolishly sold it to a buddy that needed a carry gun while I was tempted by the micro 9s.

Bought a Shield PC that came with a flawed barrel and was returned from S&W with a lesser flawed barrel.

Replaced it with a SA XDS 40 that was amazingly accurate, but the increase in mass shootings in crowds got me to thinking that 6 rounds was not enough. So I went to the Glock 19 MOS.

Accurate, reliable, plenty of capacity, but just too big.

Decided to just go back to the M&P40c. Thought the 2.0 would be cool, until I realized that it was as big as the G19.

Ended up getting two 1.0 versions and slicked up the trigger with an Apex sear.

Only thing I don't like about my new carry gun is the accuracy. I want sub-2" groups at 25 yds with a rest. The XDS and the G19 will do it.

Making a 2.0 to 1.0 sizes is appealing.
