Looking for a unicorn

Thank you all for the feedback, I have made a list of all of your suggestions and will be doing research on all of the cartridges mentioned that I am unfamiliar with (a lot of them) then weigh them against the 45/70 Siamese maueser conversion and other suggestions. I didn't think for a minute that there were so many capable cartridges.

Remage or savage action, as close to a modern bolt 45-70 as I can think of without getting expensive fast.
Forgot the .45 raptor!
Eta with the raptor, for "thumping" I'd think a 325 gr aframe at 2100(ish) fps would be alright in a 16" barrel. With a 150 yd zero, 4inch drop at 200 yds and still over 1300 fps (and for the energy hounds 1400 ft-lbs). Might indeed make for a handy light close range package, but the McGowan barrel in stock is 500 (ish) iirc.

You have to remember that energy going out the front means energy going back to you. It’s a direct correlation only alleviated by a muzzle brake.

To add on that comment, energy at the muzzle and energy at 200 yards are a different discussion too. It’s quite easy to increase muzzle energy, just use a bigger diameter bullet. But unless you also increase the bullet weight you end with a terrible ballistic coefficient. Then all the recoil you had to put up with at zero yards gets scrubbed off you end up with a rather mediocre velocity and energy at 200 yards. So there is a balance to found there to match the velocity you want with the bullet performance you want at a certain range. I myself will trade energy for bullet diameter but everyone has there own ideal.

What about a .350Rem? 225s at 2700 FPS and a 250s at 2500 our of my MOD7s 20" barrel in a 7.5lb package scoped:

Get the Kevlar LW stock and it will thump.......on both ends.

Curious what short coming 450 bushmaster has? Ruger makes ranch rifles in 450bm and I'm considering one for no reason other than I want one.

I'm looking for a caliber that might not exist.(I reload) Looking for a thumper round accurate up to 200yrds. In bolt action. With a barrel length of 16-18" able to take down anything in N. America, Canada, and possibly Alaska.

You're over thinking this, a 6.5CM, 7-08, or 308 easily meets your criteria of being capable of taking down anything in N. America, Canada and Alaska. And at ranges a lot farther than 200 yards with most game You can go to a bigger caliber, shooting heavier bullets but the only thing they thump harder is your shoulder. In fact most of them won't equal the penetration you'd get with the smaller calibers.

For your stated purposes I'd go 308 with an 18" barrel, or 30-06 with a 20" barrel and load 200 gr Partitions for the big stuff. That bullet has PROVEN to penetrate deeper in the big stuff better than anything short of 375 mag. Beating 45-70, 35 Whelen, and 338 WM.

If I absolutely had to go to a bigger caliber I'd look at 338 Fed, or 358 Win. in a short action carbine.
