30-30 for hog defense

170 grs Core-lokt will go through both shoulders or end to end any sub 200 lbs hog barring the freakish. It will most certainly break a shoulder.

Not sure where "defense" comes into it. There are very few situations in which a hog will charge. If there were conditions in which I thought that would somehow regularly be the case, a 12 ga pump and Brenekke hard cast slugs would offer more shock and awe.

In my opinion, a 30-30 lever gun is about ideal as a hog slayer for walking up hunting.

Sure. In my experience, any common rifle used for deer will put down a pig nicely. Most people kill pigs with whatever deer rifle they happen to have- often while they are deer hunting, at least around here. I kill them stone dead with my AR15. When I am pig hunting, I also carry a 40 S&W pistol.

Thank y'all for the info and the laughs, just wanted to make sure I'm not under gunned when I go stalking hogs in the river bottom on my uncle's ranch. He's dead set on using a bolt action 25-06 with a 24 inch bull barrel and scope, so I'm gonna have to watch his back and mine.

If they are facing me a shoulder shot wouldn’t be my first pick.

That said I have broken bones of much larger animals with a 9mm, not that that would have stopped them instantly.

Just make sure they don't flank you and set up an ambush.

I hear hogs wear armor now. And they are smart.

Will a 30-30 shooting a 170 grain core-lokt out break a 120 pound hog's shoulder on a frontal shot ?
If it won’t, you gotta kill that sucker one way or another before it breeds and gets those genetics out there.

I won’t say hogs are necessarily smarter than dogs. But many a dog has been killed because the hog ran into thick, nasty cover and the dogs followed.

OP - while a 24" scoped bolt gun would not be my preference hunting river bottom, the 25-06 with any suitable bullet will be death to pigs. Nevertheless, having you there with the 30-30 is a good plan. Enjoy!

12 gallon indeed! (corrected auto-incorrect)

Yeah, my pick would be irons on the .30-30 and the .25-06... last time I saw my old .25-06, it was wearing a good set of irons. :D

There is not a pig alive smarter than my dog.
Never the less, it wouldn't hurt to fix bayonets before heading to the river bottoms.

No comment on anybody's dog, but this sounds like a job for a K98k and maybe one of those reproduction bayonets if they're any count. Y'all noticed what they want for an original lately?

Who cares about intelligence, what tastes better? Pig or dog?

Now if we are talking about real intelligence, there a reason no one hunts dolphins. That's a battle we can't win.

All jokes aside, 30-30 is a good round. Remember, it's been used for moose and small bear.

I would check out some specialty hunting ammo is you wanna get real wild and crazy. Like Remington Hog Hammers. It's like a hammer, but for hogs.
