I have an ASM 1860 Army 4-screw cut for shoulder stock (BC/1993). I would like to know what the thread size is of the 4th screw(s). I would like to find a couple of set screws to temp replace them for shooting purposes as the protruding 4th screw really is a hinderance with my trigger finger. I know it is not a US SAE thread, so it is probably metric.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

Jim

Have you removed them? Any thread matching tool at your hardware store should be able to match it.

secondly... any problem with just removing them to shoot and replacing them afterward?

I live 25+ miles away from a Home Depot or Ace hardware store, and I doubt they would have any metric set screws of that size in stock. I have removed them, which took a bit of effort (thanks to Guido The ASM Gorilla who installed them). No problem with just removing them and shooting the revolver without them, but I would rather have something in the shallow holes to preclude any dirt/fouling from entering and/or damaging the threads.

I was just wondering if any of you smart fellers here would know what size they were.

Regards,

Jim

Malachi,

Sorry I am so ignorant about metric threads. What does M4 signify? Is that a #4 screw? What about the thread measurement (threads per mm/cm)? I have no clue.

Thanks in advance!

You screw them in from the inside. (Helpful hint, cut the new slot and install from the outside before grinding down the thickness of the screw head. This cleans up the threads from cutting the new slot. Polish, fire blue and install) Install the "thick side" frame first ( it's easy to go in straight with the screwdriver through the "thin" side.) The thin side frame allows installation with screwdriver at an angle.)

Well, I turn them down to basically flush, but if you're gonna do them yourself, turn them down as low as you want. I can't think of anything worse on an open top than a plastic . . . anything! Lol!!

Thanks to all for the replies! Since it is a 4-screw cut for shoulder stock, I won't modify those studs in case of resale of the gun.

I have decided to go a different route. I found an online source that sells an M4 hex head set screw 4mm in length, non-knurled cup point, carbon steel, black oxide finish, for $.08 each, no minimum order. I will install them point facing outward. I will be sure that the screws do not protrude into the internals (hammer/trigger), and if needed, I will trim the point and touch up with magic sauce (BC Super blue).

I will place an order for 10 screws (I know the postage will be more than the hardware cost but it beats the heck out of running around trying to find them locally) and after I receive them, I will do a follow-up post with photos.

Since I only need 2 screws, if anyone else needs a pair of them I will sent them to you at no cost. Barring any screwups on my part, that's enough for 4 more guns.

Thanks to Malachi!

Regards,

Jim

Edit: Ordered!

Well, for everybody contemplating this "fix" for the 4th screws on ASM's here is a little info to squirrel away. Uberti 4th screws will work in ASM revolvers as well as Colt 2nd gens and Sig series guns. They are readily available from your favorite parts monger.

I thought this was the case but not sure until this evening. I'm throwing it out also just in case the set screw ends up looking like a "broken off" screw. Of course, it's a personal thing, I think having material larger than the screw hole helps "hide" what is being done. It's a fairly popular thing to do for owners of these model revolvers. Of course, instead of buying another inventory item, I use what's on the revolver or sent with it.
Hope this helps some of you all.

I got my set screws today, and 4mm is much too small in diameter. Most probably M6 or possibly M8.

On the back burner for now.

The thread on ASM of that time frame is SAE 12-28. If you like the "nipple solution", use the nipple size labelled as "5.5mm x 0.9mm", which is, of course, SAE size #12, 28 TPI.

44 Dave, good idea on using nipples! However, from your picture, looks like you have an early, 1969 mfg, Uberti. Uberti started with metric threads, so a 6mm thread diameter nipple would work. Not so for ASM, 2nd Gen Colt, and 2nd Gen-&-later Uberti.
