One of the State employees that works in the firearms section of the lab and preps cases for the Firearms Examiners, test fired a CZ 9mm pistol into the recovery tank. When he recovered the bullets he didn’t know why they were damaged.
The gun had been used in a shooting and was sent to the lab as evidence to be processed.

Here’s a pic I took of the bullets.
The one on the right is just for comparison.

The gun had a treaded barrel and there was an AR-15 A2 style flash hider on the barrel. I looked at it and told him that the flash hider was for a 30 cal rifle and that he had just converted 9mm bullets to 30 cal. bullets.

It appears that the bad guy didn’t know better, or was trying to make sure that bullets could not be tracked back to his gun.

I think he didn't know better. I believe it would disrupt flight path. Probably couldn't hit the broad side of a barn with it. Could be wrong though.

Wow.......... Shooting 9mm's through a 30 cal. hole. Gives a whole new meaning to the term; "semi-jacketed". Probably plays havoc with accuracy would be my best guess, too. Wonder what the inside of that 30 cal. hole in the flash hider looked like ? Some severe copper fouling perhaps ?

I was surprised. The inside of the flash hider looked pretty good. The flash hider in the pic above is the one that was on the gun.
Yeah guys, but the owner of the pistol still thinks that the flash hider was a sexy addition! Were the grips changed to mother of pearl????? :)

The gun was a CZ P-09 like this one.

Gunny, can your team make an individual characteristics match of those rounds to the bird cage?
It would be very hard, but possible to match to the flash hider, But it would be from marks left from passing through the 30 cal aperture. It would be pretty much like matching tool markings.
When the gun was fired in the tank the small pieces of jacket and lead went into the tank and were recovered at the bottom of the tank, just below the firing port.

Oh! If anyone is wondering what type of ammo was used, it was Federal American Eagle, red box, 115 gr FMJ.

Most of the time they can't.....they do however seem to hit everyone else standing next to the guy they wanted to shoot.

Interesting that they had a 30 caliber flash hider threaded to match a 9mm barrel. Usually 30 caliber is 5/8X24 and 22 is 1/2x28. I know the CZ is threaded 1/2x28, so my suspicion is that what you're calling a 30 caliber flash hider is really a 223 AR unit that just happens to have a lot of excess clearance. Your shooter is lucky he still has all his fingers.

The cheapest of ebay and gun show bargain-bin accessories. Make them all the same except the threads. They don't do much but look 'right,' but at least they won't get complaints about bad tolerances causing interference with the correct rounds.

So the flash hider screwed onto the outside threading of the barrel of the handgun and yet somehow the bullets are thought to have contacted the interior of the flash hider but there's no indication of a strike? This one is puzzling. Is the interior of the flash hider necking down to a narrower diameter than the barrel of the CZ???

As you might guess, not everyone is made the same as all others.

the one on the right is a regular “bird cage” flash hider the one on the left is he style that is solid on the bottom.

Both are tapered on the ID from muzzle end to barrel. The bird cage is .340 I’d at the shoulder where the threads end. The other there is no shoulder but it is not threaded though either.

My guess if you are short sided enough to dismiss the consequences of being a criminal you likely don’t even think about putting an obstruction on a barrel.
