Hi guys, I was looking at a Parker Hale for a low price, barrel is so so but action seems okay!

Does anyone know much about these, specifically durability and reliability of the action/bolt and also the likelihood of them being accurate rifles with a good barrel on?

Thanks

I believe those were built on comercial Mauser actions, and as such should be a good option for a rebarrel. Might not be stunningly accurate, but should be accurate enough, and plenty durable.

I don't know for sure the only I've ever seen was 30 years ago. Beautiful semi custom Monte Carlo rollover stock with high figuring bluing was worn and had only three grooves in barrel. Didn't buy it because I'd never heard of Parker Hale.

I don’t know what you consider a low price, but if it’s something you could use I’d get it particularly if the stock s decent

I’d probably shoot it first to check accuracy. If not acceptable I’d get a Shilen, Krieger, etc.

Those were considered higher end rifles. I’d like to have a commercial Mauser action with a great barrel

They were built of a Mauser M98 type action made in Spain and the rifle was assemble in Birmingham England. Production began in 1967. The action was similar to the Santa Barbara Mauser action and probably made in the same factory. I think that if you bought one to use as is it would be a good purchase. I wouldn't buy one with the intent to re-barrel because the addition of a new barrel would bring the cost higher than the value of the rifle. A rifle with a new barrel would also need a new trigger, recoil pad, etc. Parker Hale also made a Model 1100 which had a more conventional style stock which I liked better than the stock on the Model 1200. The 1200 stock with the roll over cheekpiece is pretty much out of style now here in the U.S. The rifles with the Safari style stock are much more desirable.

There's a varmint version at my LGS in .22-250 and they have 600 on it w big Redfield 6X.
Recoil pad is mushed.
It's been there a while.

Guy I know had one in '06, killed bear and deer with it. Recoil pad went mush.

Hunting bud got one from a relative, is like new (recoil pad OK) and it shoots OK.
Nothing great.

Is just a neat old time piece rifle IMHO. The trigger is not good, suppose somebody makes a decent upgrade for reasonable.

Like has been stated in upstream posts.........buy to use. Not to rebarrel.

I've had one chambered in .243 Win. since 1971. They are very nice rifles and shoot lights out (for a hunting rifle) if you are willing to put a little time and money into them. Float the barrel with at least 0.030" clearance between the barrel and forend, bed the recoil lug and action, pillar bed the rear action screw, and adjust the trigger - and you will have a real shooter on your hands.

If you decide to re-barrel, E.R. Shaw will do a turnkey job including duplicating the existing barrel contour, chambering in the cartridge of your choice, threading and installing the new barrel, and bluing the action and barrel for about $550.

Loon Wulf is correct. They are indeed a Mauser action. IIRC, they were Canadian made, though I may be wrong about that.
My dad had one in .270 Win. that he bought in the 1960's. He left it to my brother when he passed away. I worked up a load for it with 130 grain Sierra Pro Hunters and IMR 4831 that would put 5 rounds inside a quarter at 100 yards. Brother Poper still uses that rifle to this day and neither of us can see any degradation in function or accuracy from day one. I am still kicking myself in the butt for passing on its .30-06 twin at a gun show a few years ago. As I recall the asking price on that one was $225 - a steal at twice the price, IMHO.

If it is in reasonably good condition, I wouldn't hesitate to buy it.

I had a Parker Hale 1200 in 30-06 that was sold in the US by JC Penney. Ah, for the days when a rifle was considered sporting goods and you could buy one in a department store. The barrelled action was made in Spain, IIRC by Santa Barbara. It would be a decent donor action.

My brother has one, it's a good and accurate rifle. Commercial Mauser action, if price is right good candidate for a rebarrel if you decide to go that route.
