I have a chance to buy a 1-4 x20 Leupold heavy duplex scope from a neighbor for a really good price.I was thinking of mounting it on my AR,here are my thoughts on doing this....I live on a ranch in Oregon, surrounded by thick forest. My AR's purpose is HD,livestock protection and use in the timber. All of this is short range, out to about 150 yards max. I figure this compact scope with the heavy reticle and generous eye relief would work well for that range and the low light conditions. I have a RDS on the carbine now,but my old eyes could do with some help with a bit of magnification. I fully understand this is not a scope for target shooting
Have any of you guys used a scope with this reticle for hunting in the woods? Do you think this would be an improvement over the RDS or a waste of coin?

I like the heavy duplex reticle, it’s my second favorite. My favorite reticle is a German #4 which of course is logical since I like the heavy duplex.

I bought a VX-3 1.75x6x32 with heavy duplex in 2014 cuz it didn’t come with the German #4. I had to send it to Leupold because the windage turret was defective from the get go. When I inquired about the cost of changing the reticle from Heavy Duplex to German #4 Leupold said there would be no charge since they had to take the scope apart anyway and also as a means of making up for selling me a defective scope. Very nice of them.

I mounted the scope on my Marlin 336, my BIL liked it so much he bought one for his 336. He didn’t even notice the scopes had different reticles so they are pretty similar.

As for the German #1 I may have seen one in person many years ago but it’s been too long to remember how it looked exactly. For the shooting conditions described by the OP I think a German #1 would probably be better than a heavy duplex or German #4. But it would cost a fair amount to have it changed. So, to make a short story long I believe a heavy duplex would be fantastic for your needs.
