Which commercial aftermarket excellent condition M1 carbine under $1000

While the factory Choate folder works well, and makes a compact car gun...I very much like the original wood stock, and may pick up an M2 stock for it

My Universal Gen 1 had problems when I bought it on Gunbroker. The aluminum trigger pack was cracked, so I eventually found a sporterized USGI M1 as a great parts gun. The USGI trigger pack fit's nicely, and other then some slop in the stock, it runs and runs. Its great having a full functional rifle now. As to the parts gun, I will just hold onto it for now.

Thanks for the information, NIGHTLORD40K. Interestingly, one of my brothers retired from Inland Manufacturing, a General Motors subsidiary, twenty years or so ago.

Saginaw Steering Gear also made them and was another GM subsidiary.

Over the past fifty years or so, I've passed by the Saginaw Steering Gear factory many, many times, visible from the road near the intersection of Route 46 and Interstate 75 (I think), just outside of Saginaw, Michigan. However, the last few times I've driven by that location, I've noticed that they are no longer there.

I managed to snag a almost unfired early Universal (28XXX) last year for $599 with sling and four Korean 15 rounders. Looks good, shoots great- I am a happy camper!

If I had 1k to spend I would not consider a commercial M-1 carbine, I would either search a little harder or pony up a little more cash for a real one.

And I would make sure I had an exceptional M-1 Garand rifle first.

But I haven't been shopping lately... I got my first M-1 carbine for $50, and 25 years later when my M-1 Carbine infatuation wore off I was happy to get $350 for a rearsenaled Winchester in 95% condition.

If you mean the wood folding M1A1 stocks, I've got a repro and should note a couple things: they don't lock into place open or closed like your choate. It's simply a ball detent, so if you put too much pressure outward while you're firing it'll collapse on you, which doesn't make for the most stable firing platform. It can be tightened down to mitigate it a little, but it's honestly not as practical as what you've already got. Also, if you decide to take the wire stock off and have a 'long pistol' setup for whatever reason, you come under 26" overall length and have made an NFA weapon, so take the whole stock off the action first if you're going to take the wire off for maintenance.

I see a couple decent deals on the site you linked to - a USGI '44 inland for 950, and a nice looking iver johnson for 650. I'd jump all over the inland, but either should do you fine.

No, I wrote M2, and that's what I meant ..
An M2 potbelly birch stock is what I would use. GI ones are available fairly cheap.
Don't know where you got the idea that I wanted to take the buttstock off my folder. Vivid imagination, I guess

Certainly didn't mean any offense! I figured trading one folder for another would be a reasonable conclusion, and was just trying to share info. Even if you knew all that, someone else reading the thread may not.

I've seen people on the range with m1 carbines in m1a1 stocks with the wire folder removed. No imagination necessary, and can get you 10 years in club fed.

The only M1A1 stock I've seen at my range, is the repro one I ran on my cmp Inland for a short while.
Frankly, I never see M1 carbines at my rifle club, other than the two I own.
