New York hunters

think we did a thread about camo a while back lol I showed off my Hawaiian shirt camo then.

I'd actually trade you for colder weather, some days anyway.... Lava fields at 100-110 degrees suck pretty bad too.

will be useing a 243 rifle this year. I have several rifles there that I left there for deer hunting.

I loved my 243 win I've mentioned before it got me back into hunting and target shooting. My wife accidentally sold it thinking it was her 223.

I'll be using either my rem 700 7mm08 or my savage m11 223. Each has an advantage, the 7mm bigger projectiles, longer range. 223 lower recoil, smaller projectiles, shorter range, possibly less bloodshot meat, Leopold vx3L. I haven't used this round for deer hunting yet, but it is viable within its limitations.

walked to my jeep. After defrosting my door handle the temp display read - 28.

Severe cold makes still hunting difficult everything is crunchy, it's impossible to move quietly. Sitting on stand trying to stay warm without moving too much to give your position away. Real tough sometimes.

I like the 7mm08 round. I have a 7mm08 contender barrel and would like to get a rifle in that round. I had one and sold it about four years ago. If I find another at a decent price I'll buy it. I dhot two deer last year with my brothers Remington model 7 in 7mm08.
I have a Remington model 7 in 6mm on lay away at a pawn shop.
My brother bought a Remington model 7 in 243 this summer that I might use if I don't bring my Remington model 788 in 243 back.
Then I bought a H&R Handi-Rifle with the two barrels one in 243 and the other in 308 that I took back there in September and left there.
I have a friend that lived in Doraville , on the other side of the river at Center Village then go towards Windsor that used a single-shot H&R in 223 that had a scope mounted on it and took a deer every year with it.
Pennsylvania was any centerfire rifle. I bought a brand new Ruger model 77 wood stock/blue barr in 22 Hornet, after mounting a scope on it and sighting it in I shot a four point buck with it and haven't shot it since. I bought that gun in the early ninties,

I have many fond memories of hunting back there and love coming back there to hunt.

That's the thing about hunting in NY, especially the Catskills. It can be sub zero one day, and above 60 another. I usually tried to find a slight rise in the woods, and would sit there all day with my back against a tree. You'll go out before daybreak and it will be below freezing, so you dress for it. When the sun comes out later and you're dragging out a deer, you're hot and over dressed and sweating your ass off .lol

My hunting rifle in NY was an old scoped Belgian Browning BLR lever action in .308. Great light short woods gun with plenty of punch. Now in a straight wall state, so it's a scoped Rossi lever action carbine in .357.

"You're going out to shoot dogs, right?"

Well I made it out to the range today. My SIL stayed he because his back was sore from working on a friend's barn last night. So I took my 10 yr old grandson. Had to buy, heaven forbid, factory ammo because I haven't been able to load anything lately. Anyway I bought fiochi 55fmj bulk pack and hornandy 139 interlocks. I had a few 140 nbt's in my bag from my last range trip also.

My plan was to mount 2 new optics to my m11 to test each one out, but changed my mind. Instead I just shot the 223 with the vx3l. The weather was cold, a few drops of rain fell on route to the range. By the time I arrived it was sleet mixed with snow and gusting wind. I managed to shoot 3 sub moa groups at 100 yds. with my savage, one under a half inch, and a 10 shot string on steel plate at 300 meters.

With my rem 700 I shot 1 three quarter inch group with the nbt's at 100 yds, 1 1.5 I. Group at 200 yds, 1 2.5 in group at 300 yds.and 10 hits on the steel plates at 300 meters with the 139 interlocks. Overall not a bad outing.

My grandson fired his lakefield 64b at 75 yds hitting a little left with 30 or so rounds. I adjusted the optic 2 in right and he was on pretty well. Then I brought out my AR, the first time he fired it, the peep sight took some getting used to for him, but he managed to hit paper a n steel at 100 yds. Before he started shooting the AR he got saftey lessons with the rifle and instruction on which target to shoot, because I was shooting the other one. Well that was a great plan, if only it worked that way. He shot the target full of holes that I was shooting groups on. Oh well it happens I suppose. But great day anyway.

Interesting thread here. This year should be a repeat of last year with two western NY state areas that I hunt. One is in area 8A west of Rochester and up along Lake Ontario where I have a blind and a ladder stand on a friend's property. Pretty much all flatland with big wood lots and agricultural fields. No rifles allowed so it's shotgun & handgun. The other is a friend's place in area 8N in the Bristol hills where I can use rifle, shotgun, or handgun but this weekend I was in my blind down there for crossbow season that runs Nov. 2nd to the 15th. Unfortunately I saw no deer when in the blind with the crossbow. Saturday we had a high in the upper 40's and Sunday morning we had a light dusting of snow that I hoped would get some deer moving but if they were it wasn't anywhere near me. Did take a few pictures including one looking out from the blind Sat. afternoon. : IMG_2739.JPG and one Sunday morning : IMG_2742.JPG Hoping for more deer movement come Nov. 16th when gun opens up for both of those areas. Haven't gotten a deer in a few years now but I've passed up a few and now feel that perhaps I'm getting too picky in my old age.

Being a little picky isn't a bad thing I've given quite a few a pass it's a chance to reach maturity. They can't get there if we take them in adolescence.

You can use handguns or muzzle loaders in shotgun only areas. They are only excluding center fire rifles.

Passed up a fawn last Nov. from that very blind..... It was antlerless so it would have been legal on my doe permit. Had the 30-30 crosshairs on it and couldn't do it. Told my buddy that I made an appointment for next November with Bambi to come back fully grown. So now this November and perhaps I'll get a second chance at the same deer later this month. In the rifle zone I pretty much stick to rifles although I could use the handguns, but in the shotgun zone I sometimes use a 7.5" stainless Redhawk in 44 Mag. or a 14" T/C Encore in 7mm-08 if I'm not using the slug gun depending on my mood.

22-250 welcome to the New York thread.
The spot you hunt out of looks like a nice place. Most of my hunting has been in Broome, Chenango and Delaware Counties. Shotgun only areas suck, back when the whole western part of the State was shotgun only and no sunday hunting i use to use rifle alot. I had the landowners OK to use them.
That was many years ago.
Back then some of the areas you needed three to four people for a doe permit and you got a leg band to put on the deer.

I never hunted up Rochester way. I have only been up there a few times years ago.

If they ever pass the National Resiprication for handguns it will make my day.
I have a bunch of handguns to match up with rifles I have for deer hunting.
A couple of years ago I bid $895 on a 7 1/2" - 357 magnum Redhawk on one of my budweiser nights and won the bid so it resides with my other Redhawks. Two 7 1/2" - 44 magnums and a 5" or so 41 magnum.

I think to new hunters deer look the same, and they my miss judge distance. So say a year ling steps out in a field and the guy though was 300 yards and it is really 150.

We had a city guy one year shoot a camel, you a camel. How?, My cousins have kinda like a retirement home for old circus animals, guys seen the camel and thought it was a deer.

That's as funny as the guy who shot someone's mule and was so proud of his muledeer.

What did your cousin do with the dead camel?
I don't know what they do with the animals, maybe goes to taxidermy guy for a displays. They used to have tiger lions other big cats a black panther got out one time, they had a few dozen elephants, I believe they just have one Asian elephant she likes to brake out but just goes for walks.
